thanks cg,

OS is offering superb products, I was wondering about the new collector sets compared to old ones, but maybe is just the quality of your pics that make the set look even better :)

The new Knight, in an image off the HOS website.

The old Knight...

I was referring to the knight you can see here:

But I guess you are right, it was just a wrong impression I got. Cheers

thanks for your comment rc,

the collector has always striken me as a set with a very simple and clear but at the same time very elegant design, but I can clearly see your point about the pedestal of the knight.

The well-carved Knights. One of my few disappointments with this set, and HOS Jaques reproductions in general, was the failure to stamp the King's Knights and Rooks with the crown in the Jaques fashion. You could get them stamped only on the very most expensive sets. There was no good reason for that. I prefer Official Staunton's approach.

Good point Chuck about stamping the King side knights and rooks. For comparison, I have added some pics of my HOS 4" ebony Collector with the stamping. I got this set around the year 2000.

Thanks, Mike. And thanks for the great pics! Is that an acquired patina, or antiquing?

Its both Chuck, I've been using Howard's "Feed-N-Wax" Beeswax Orange Oil to enhance the patina.

I loved this review.  The Collector sets are my favourites--I like them just as much as the really expensive reproductions of early Jaques sets that costs many, many times more.  Alas--I don't know if I'll ever be able to afford the Collector series!

Is it weird that these sets are making me Drool?

Thanks, Nate. I'm sure you will be able to afford one sooner than you think. I have five of them. This one, a 4.4" King ebonized, a 4.0" King in rosewood, an Imperial Collector 4.0" in blood rosewood, and a Collector II, 4.0" ebonized.

I am a big fan of the HOS collector.  Have had the 3.75" plastic set (1x Natural and 1x Ivory) for 10+ years.  I bring it to the club every week.  I wish HOS woud offer a single weighted version, so it is easier to carry around in all day tournaments.

I acquired a 4" Rosewood version on clearance last year and couldn't be happier.  There was a flaw in one of the pawns, but HOS took care of it.   Although my lust list is for a vintage 9cm Jacques or a reproduction club size Jacques, I wouldn't be able to resist a reasonably priced (i.e., clearance!) 3.75 inch collector in ebony or ebonized.

Thank you, Chuck--that's most kind of you, and very encouraging, too!

Hi Mike

Do you use this wax on all your pieces (ebony, boxwood) or just on the antiqued ones?

Hi Bobby, Yes, Bobby just about most of my boxwwod and ebony sets. But not for ebonised  or stained pieces.
