Official Staunton is not any better either as some agents on here try to prove. Their chess sets specially ebony has its own problems also same chess sets are being sold almost half price on ebay.

TY all. HoS shipping price is over $400 lol. That's crazy.
Correction SM: HOS least expensive collector's (Jaques) set is @ $597.50 and is only available on clearance in this choice of woods blood rosewood and ebony. In addition there is a Fed Ex delivery charge of $17.59 to be accrued as well in the final pricing. I believe my choice from stauntoncastle will arrive free of charge at set price and no other charges set forth. Besides I like the color of the antiquing of the boxwood although the HOS offer is quite stunning.
Could you link me this set? Can't find it on the website.

  @ Redlynx17: The link to the blood rosewood Jaques set from the HOS website as follows;

If this is what you seek.

I recently ordered the O.S. Antiqued 1849 with the Make an Offer of 400 GBP.

I'm also waiting for an Mtmwoods board that was purchased for me as a Xmas gift. @QtoQlevel3 has a few gorgeous ones.
I would like to correct a few statements made above regarding Staunton Castle, having just ordered a set from them that arrived last week. I am very, very happy with it!
Staunton Castle is the Canada-based distributor of Mandeep Handicrafts products. I do not believe that they have a warehouse in Canada. My set shipped free from Amritsar by FedEx.
I was not billed duties after the fact. At least here in Canada, FedEx allows one to pay in advance of delivery, but I always just pay the driver. The duties were not at all expensive, either.
I guess, if you're not used to ordering products from outside the country you live in, duties could be a surprise; if you are used to it, then you're not.
I would not hesitate to recommend Staunton Castle on the basis of my recent experience, and I would go further: the value of their sets in terms of what you get for each dollar spent surpasses any other major dealer.
That's not to say I don't like other dealers. I love the excellent quality of the sets and the outstanding customer service from Cool Chess Canada, and I very much love HOS. My ideal set (which I can't afford right now) remains the exqusite HOS Collector. But the value of my Staunton Castle set has me feeling more satisfied than I would have thought possible.
Looking for a nice wooden chess set. Willing to spend decent amount of money.
HoS and JoL are two of the most reputed companies and I know you can't go wrong with either.
Anyone who has used both sets and won't mind highlighting the main differences. Not sure why JoL is more expensive than HoS. I'm assuming it's because of the history maybe?
Thanks.
In my opinion, HOS is considerably better value than JOL. Their sets, their customer service, their photos, their website, and their extensive product lineup are all superior.
On another note, I've never ordered a set from Official Staunton, but they have a very good reputation here on these forums. I think they are an excellent company from what I've heard.

@TheJackelC4: Thanks for the compliment of my boards I got from Andrei over at mtmwood.com. I can say this much for your Christmas gift you're getting, you will be quite pleased with the quality once you see it up close and in your own hands. Please post a photo of your board when your receive it and time permits. I had wanted to send OS an offer for the same set you're ordering but I have to wait until my finances level out to normal a bit. I was going to forward an offer for the 1849 lacquered set with the chessboard. My projected bid was going to be for 580 GBP but that may change +or- 1 or 2 pounds but that's to be determined at a later date.
I personally like many of the sets mentioned here, but I "did" just receive the Official Staunton 1849 Limited Edition Lacquered set that I got about 2 weeks ago.I'd be hard pressed to find a hint of virtually ANYTHING  not to love about it and the dealings with Official Staunton was beyond perfect! I'm not one to take out an electron microscope to find a slight change from historical specs....but...I am very,"very" picky and the set is staggeringly perfect! Super company to deal with!-

My offer was 80% of MSRP so I'm confident you'll get it with an offer of ~83% of MSRP. I love that board also but space wise boards take up lots of space and I'm trying to conserve some .

I can really relate to your space conservation tendencies to which I, living in an Ozone Park apt., have to mindful of my living space as well. My closets are nearly 90% to peak capacity so a new board will be a challenge to reserve a spot for the new addition(s), I'm planning on hitting up Andrei for another entry late this year. The offer I plan to project to OS would be likely offered near the summer months that is if this set is still around which may or may not be the case. I sure wish that OS had a lay-a-way plan to make some of their payment options more manageable to customers. Perhaps Mr. Carl will see this posting and try to work with customers on devising a new payment option such as a deferred payment plan.

I have taken the liberty of emailing Mr Erik Allebest the CEO of Chess.com
Well Erik now you are GOD of the chess world I guess mere mortals whom once roamed in the same shoes as you are nothing but a distant memory? You have come a long way since asking me for the lowest prices possible on container full’s of tournament chess sets for the once owned wholesale chess company! It’s great what you have achieved with chess.com however I take serious issue when any tom dick or harry can freely create lies, slanderous comments against my company and others for example, and not be held accountable! Your platform fails in the immediate banning of a member who creates a platform with the sole intent of defaming a business such as mine. The troll member in question is called STAUNTONMASTER - I give fair warning that you take action before we initiate our own agenda against chess.com and this member !
Regards
Carl
Yeah that's some real tact right there. You're bound to get your way with such a unwarranted rant at someone who is not even remotely involved in this thread. Glad you're tone deaf enough to show everyone how you do business though.

Have a little class and do this behind closed doors?
If it doesn't work out for you, just leave.
yeah youre right ...
Come on, give Carl a break.
Carl has been on this forum for a few years and has provided a lot of information, special member discounts to anyone on the forum, and he has payed attention to what some of us want in a chess set. He actually took the opinions of some here to design at least 2 sets that I am aware and I remember him making modifications to piece design in a particular set he was coining out with based on comments of those in this forum.
Yes, Carl has been a very productive and worthwhile member os this forum.
The problem that has occurred recently is that there are a few posters than come here with some real problems for the forum.
First, they are completely anonymous and therefore do not end up taking any responsibility for the things they say here. And this anonymity also allows a person to post as a troll under one account, have that account closed and then come back under a complete different handle and account. once again this is really a problem for the forum.
These trolls are usually also using a free account and not paying as a number of us do. Understand that I have no problem with the free accounts, per se. But the free or no cost account combined with the anonymity appears to make a real problem with honesty and trustworthiness.
Another problem is that this particular poster, Stauntonmaster, has shown some real problems in his posting. First he makes generalized and usually always very negative comments about sets and Chess Retailers. He makes negative claims with no evidence of specific problems. And with that he has never posted a picture showing the problems of which he writes.
This poster and a few others have driven away a number of members or posters here that were very good people with knowledge and experiences of Chess Equipment. For instance, this anonymous, non-paying member is saying that certain companies provide poor quality products. However he provides no evidence at all for his claims.
I have to agree with Carl in that the administrators of this forum should do some things to improve these posts.
In my opinion the anonymity should not be allowed. People should have their names on their profile page, for instance. If we know the name of the person saying such wrong things that would help.
Also, the negative trolling that Stauntonmaster and a few others have done should be moderated and stopped.
House Staunton are good retailer they have higher standard than lot other but stauntonmaster troll is sean sullivan and need to stop his troll posting
