I have about 50, chess tables not included.

How can one survive the "Financial Disobedience Claim" cross-examination by a significant other?

@TheGiuocoPianio - LOL!!! One can survive the "Financial Disobedience Claim" cross-examination by opening your own account, making it clear to your economically inexperienced significant other that it's a tax-saving scheme and doing said other some good every now and then to prove the latter! If that doesn't help, plead financial insanity! Claiming to be in a self-help group, such as Chess Collectors International or chess.com, could also be beneficial.

Wow all impressive numbers people are posting! For the folks who have 10 20 40 boards! How are you guys storing this many?

I own 4 chess boards. No official 'special editions' but 3 of them are special to me.

1: A normal wooden one board+pieces for comon use.

2: The board that was used by my Grandfather to teach me how to play.

3: A  small wooden travel chess board, that also was used by my Gradfather and me.

4: A set that friends made for me with a wooden board and every white piece is made of a different ceramic, and every black piece is made of a different metal (note: i studied material science)

I have them standing on edge on a table in the corner of my office with a coffer for my large set sitting in front of them like a bookend so they do not fall. The ones that are part of a set with a box storage that the board sits on top of/in are stored there.

I handle the spouse guilt trip by reminding her that I sold my acoustic guitar collection 4 years ago and put the money in a joint account.....Hand pain was worse than a loss in a chess game.

It’s seems you are back on the wagon and buying chess treasures! Woo hoo…

Looking forward to seeing the board.
👍

For me - ridiculous - for a relatively new collection. 12 boards … broken down as follows:
- 4 as tables (with legs) - all second-hand refurbished and 2 of those with removable board (ie legs not fixed);

- 3 other boards - secondhand;
- 3 board purchased new.

- 2 folding boards - one massive and one standard size both containing beautiful Phillipines pieces.

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

i have a plastic one from the dollar store

You know I feel your pain! Once bought my newest guitar, I started playing about five minutes every three-four days or so. I can now play about 15 minutes every day after work. Slowly, very slowly. It’s been good therapy really.

Four boards here. Three home made, one really cheap one that I bought. You know the kind, checkers, dominoes, chess all in one box.

Re: the question of storage - at any given time I have 3-5 boards with pieces on display around the house … sometimes my wife will ask me to move some into storage but mostly she likes them too, I think! 🤔 Some boards rest in a shelf -  stored vertically - while others areunder each other - hidden in plain sight! In the picture below there 4 stacked. And as with all of this … none are ‘needed’ and most were relatively inexpensive finds that I have enjoyed restoring… as someone else mentioned, my main board is digital on chess.com!😊

Been there....Saw two hand therapists, but nothing could stop waking up every morning with a claw hand frozen in place for a minute or two....Sucked!

I was getting pretty good and had Martins.H&D,Collings,Gibson and Bourgeois Customs......Hated selling them, but the wild thing is I can do a hard gym workout or anything else and zero issues.....It was just the guitar,no matter how light the string choices made and my technique was perfect..... Sheesh! I coulda' been somebody ....Ha!

We could be twins. Most days start with hot water on my hands just to ‘wake’ em up. The evening is usually a 30 minute hot tub treatment at 105 degrees. I coulda been a contendah! So, back to the OP (sorry everyone)

Great pics all around, i love being able to see them albeit from a distance. Thank you for sharing!

I own just one chess board which I made in high school wood shop class in 1965. Thanks to my brother for rescuing it from my parents house while I was in the USAF. It has two inch squares of American walnut and ash.

I plan on making a second with 2-1/4 in squares of Tropical walnut and maple.

I don’t know exactly how many - too many!
Certainly more than 100, perhaps more than 150. Not counting the chess computers, the foldable boards, the travel sets, etc. In the apartment right now I have only 20 boards. Most boards and pieces are in the attic.
Displayed are only two boards.

I'm afraid to ask how many chess clocks people have.....Me? Only one and no plans for more.

Went analog,for the aesthetic appeal.

brasileirosim

I have a couple, yes. Two Solora clocks (which I bought in flea markets for almost nothing), a Swiss Looping, which is quite rare. My beat clocks however

brasileirosim

This is a sample of my clocks. The black ones in the foreground are by fair my favourite clocks. Amazing design, quite rare, I only saw a third one in a shop, and never saw one in internet.

I remember this thread from a few years an ingenious storage solution, for multiple boards.

I have well over 50 and probably closer to 100 if you count the smaller ones.  I do collect chess sets, clocks, books and misc.  Under misc I have things like signed chess trading cards, postal chess recording albums (these are really cool slotted chess "books" for 6 games), variant chess sets (like my plunder chess set) and things like chess dice, chess cards, chess calendars, etc.  I also have a room in my house dedicated to my chess stuff.

(Why yes, I am single, why do you ask?)
