Mr.Ed , what would I give to have that in my living room, but the wife

My dear wife, that makes me .

Yeah, yeah I adore her in every way. Oh , happy me !

One set is enough, yes dear.

Yeah,yeah chess is just a hoby, ect,ect

That's funny.  Well, that photo taken in my living room was taken one day when I had them all out.  Normally most all of those sets are put away, of course, with just one or two displayed on a coffee table or something.

There was a time when I kept several sets out permanently, but then I adopted a couple of cats and I found out my two cats like to knock over the pieces and walk over the boards.  So now most all sets are put away.

If you look closesly, you can see that most all of my sets are either small, or plastic or otherwise "cheap/inexpensive."  Some of those sets I've had since I was 12, which was almost 40 years ago.  I really only have three or four sets that I consider "nice."

Right now I have maybe 6 sets. My original wooden pieces that my grandmother gave me when I was about 10, so almost 50 years ago. Still have the maple and walnut board I made in shop class about the same time. My old Chess Challenger and the pieces it came with. My travel/tournament set with rollup vinyl board, plastic pieces replaced with a set of decent wooden pieces (don't like playing with plastic). Another decent wooden set I keep out at my weekend cabin with another maple and walnut board my oldest son made in his shop class. My "good" wooden set with a nice commercial board in maple and rosewood. And of course my pocket chess set that serves very little practical purpose except make me think I can play like Fischer.

Coming very close to pulling the trigger on a Jaques Fischer and Spasskey set one of these days soon.

Oh and almost forgot, I too have the Simpsons set that my dear departed wife gave me for Christmas quite a few years ago. I don't play it but it is a lasting reminder of how she was willing to indulge my silly obsessions.

Jacques is high end.

My wood tournament set is the House of Staunton Reykjavik II Rosewood and Boxwood. Two of my plastic sets are House of Staunton Collector Series. I have both the 4" and 3.75" kings. The latter was purchased in conjunction with Seirawan Chess pieces, which match well with this set.

Radical_Drift

I currently own two.

4 sets. One magnetic mini travel set. One wood set. One roll up vinyl set I keep in the car. And some ugly glass set a friend gave me and I don't have the heart to get rid of.

A lovely set and table of course, but the clock is the finishing touch.  Money well spent in my opinion.

Thanks, but the table was the first chess table I made myself before I quit cabinetmaking and worked my way through college. The clock and pieces I bid for on e-bay. Cheers, John C.

2 complete sets and 3-4 incomplete sets. The 2 complete sets are my tournament set and a nice hand-carved set i bought in Indonesia about 10 years ago. Among the incomplete sets are a nice set with wooden pieces and a really nice board that I received as a birthday present in college and the set I bought (with my own money) in high scool, as well as 1-2 cheap plastic sets I boght for the kids when they were young. Notably, my sets were intact until my kids managed to lose several pieces somehow. That's why I don't let them play with the set I got in Indonesia even though they are older now. I also have although i do not own the 2 tournament sets I bought for my sons. They don't seem to use the sets any more, as they rarely play. In fact, my youngest hasn't played since his last tournament over a year ago.

Let's see.... a triple weighted tournament set w/ vinyl board, a nice wooden heavily weighted set that stays set up beside my desk in the office for analysis and the occasional game with my daughter, a folding wooden travel set that my mom got me back in the seventies (never parting with that one,) a cheap folding magnetic one, and a metal set that I received one year as a Christmas present. So, five. Good, I'm not addicted.
