How would you restore these pieces?

Won them on ebay for $11. At the least, it looks like them come with a nice box which I could use. But, if possible, I'd like to fix them up. . . especially the knights, and especially the black knights. . .

Any suggestions on how to do itnullnullnullnull

I wouldn't touch them, but then I like battle scarred sets.  It doesn't look like it was ever an expensive set so I don't understand why you would want to "restore" them.  That said, there are a variety of restoration approaches from quick and dirty (magic marker) to sending them off to an expert (expensive).  Maybe you should do a forum search for other threads on the subject since we have a number of accomplished collectors who contribute regularly and several expert restorers as well.

This looks like a good thread to get you started, but I'm sure there are others...

thanks for the reply baddogno. I appreciate your input!

I know they aren't a fancy set... I guess that's why I want to try my hand at it... it's low risk! I like battle scars too, but I think the knights in particular are a bit far gone. . . I love chess pieces, and if I can learn something about how to restore them I'm into it!

Glad to help.  Hopefully some of the experts will weigh in as well.  Just a step up from your usual Magic Marker are these from Stewmac.  Guitar techs use them for quick small touchups and I used them years ago to cover up a repaired headstock crack.  Seems like they would do the trick, but I'm no expert...

Thanks for suggesting my thread baddogno, but it's only relevant if the Black pieces are ebony and have cracks. Clearly the tops of the Knights are not ebony, although the rest of the Black pieces may be.

I believe you could re-colour the Black Knights with black car spray paint, but doing so might make them look too new.

Hopefully Alan will be along soon to give us his advice.

Not a bad set for $11! Are they weighted?

Thanks! Not sure yet. They arrive on Friday.

I guess the thing that bothers me about the knights is that it looks like there is leftover lacquer or something in some places... Looks kind of gross to my eye, like never-brushed teeth.

nullI guess my # 1 question is... how do I get the dark brown stuff off ^^

The missing black on the black knights doesn't bother me as much, although it is an awful lot of color that's been lost. Might try to replace it, but I'm not sure yet as that could lead to uneven color on the black side.  we'll see...
