Your welcome Chuck! Thanks for the nice pics. Set looks great on your board. I particularly like the Bishops and those squatty Pawns. Here's a picture of GM Lajos Portish with his similar set.
Hungarian Chess Set

Really lovely set, Chuck. Mike has some really nice sets. @goodnightmike, nice pic! And thanks again for the Dubrovnik set. It's become my daily set for the time being.
Your quite welcome Robert. I glad to hear you are getting a lot of mileage out your 4" Noj Dubrovnik! It certainly deserves it!!

cgrau, that's a good looking set. The bases on those pawns look as wide as those of the pieces.
By the way, did you recently post pics of a set similar to this one?

Nice set. What I don't understand is on the first pic, the board looks like it's on top of the table and the next couple look like it is inlayed. Is the height of the table top higher on one side than on the others, ot is it inlayed all around?

Up, I have a vintage Czech set in the style of your link, but I haven't posted it yet. I have a Romanian set with similarities, as well as the Dubrovniks and Soviet sets, which bear some resemblence.

You are observant, Puzzle! It's both. The table has a removeable, reversible inlay, one side tan suede for cards or whatever, the other side had a small, sprayed black and walnut board. The kids used it for crafts 20 years ago, and then it sat disassembled in the basement covered with tempras and glitter, until I reclaimed it, sanded off the board, and sprayed on a new 2.5" board. Some of my boards set on the support for the inlays. Others were too small, so I just cut a 24" x 24" piece of finish oak plywood and stained it dark walnut. When I insert that, it's recessed about 3/8". So then when I put a board on top of that, it's partly raised, partly recessed. I'll get around to spraying an ivory board on the insert, probably 2.5" squares so I can use it with all my large sets. Here are before and after shots. I don't have any shots of the new oak insert, but I can take one.

Thanks, Robert. Mike's an inspiration for all of us.

Here is a 2006 version of the set in plastic. This shot of Susan Polgar incidentally was taken the day after I was at that very same table.

Here's a previous forum posting on this set in plastic.

Back in 2006, I had the pleasure to visit Budapest. While I was there I played some chess with local players at the public baths and a subway station. I've never found the plastic set that we used, but Mike Ladzinski was kind enough to sell me the wooden version, shown here with a 2.375 Ferrer board. Some of the pieces had some dings, which Alan Dewey expertly repaired. Thank you again Mike and Alan!
I am a Hungarian chess fan living in USA. I have a similar Hungarian wooden set (black and white). 3 months ago a ordered the replica of this Hungarian chess set from India (
chessbazaar). They did very good job, but the price was pretty high ($ 175,00).

Hi Pityuka. Please post some pictures of your sets. Do you know where we can get plastic versions of this set like I played on in Budapest? Many thanks.
