I lost 1750 pounds trying to buy chess

Hello.

This is my very first post on this site, but i follow your community for a while.

I would like to share my story that might help someone.

My name is Ivan, and I am an enthusiast in the field of antique chess pieces. I spend most of my free time on sites around the world where people sell things and where i can find interesting chess. That's how I found this man on craiglist uk in Derby region. He offered a nice antique Jaques chess set with original board and  box.

We haggled a bit and settled on a price of £ 1,750 including shipping to my address in England.

Payment method - bank transfer. I offered a paypal, but he told that it’s not an option for him.

Next day I made a payment, but the seller answer me what he didn’t get a money.

I sent a payment order and he confirmed that the details are correct, but there is no money.

I make similar payments on a regular basis and have not had any problems before. I turned to the bank with a request to investigate the payment, after a few weeks they replied that the money had been credited to the recipient.

I wrote several letters to the seller, but he never answered any more. Several months passed and I lost money and never got chess.

I have the name and address that he gave for the payment. I contacted the department in England that investigates online fraud, but received a response from them that there was not enough information to investigate.

I attach several photos from the ad

I was acting stupid and lost money, please be smarter and take care of yourself.

I am sorry to hear your story. It is very scary to wire money to someone who wasn't well known and reputable company. Good luck with your situation. I hope you find this person and can take legal action against them.

That's a shame. I googled a bit and saw that the box is called a carton-pierre, which means it is made of papier-mâché.

I also saw that a box alone had gone for £5800.

"I offered a paypal, but he told that it’s not an option for him."

that would have been enough of an alarm bell for me to be suspicious and not have continued.

doublerainbowchess Sorry for your loss , I feel with you on this !  when the offer is to good ,

And it that kind of money would never do a bank transfer ?

He offered a nice antique Jaques chess set with original board and box / too much of a bargain .

I am amazed those pictures haven't been recognized here. You might try asking some Jaques experts if they know the origins of those photos. I know it probably won't get your money back but I had a similar experience of someone using ripped off photos to try to sell me something and I recognized the photos as belonging to someone else.

Yeah you really can't trust people on craigslist. Every time I try to sell something on there I get at least one person who tries to scam me. Never send or accept electronic payments or checks from someone that you can't verify. Always meet in person in a safe location.

The person in question probably never even had the chess set, but rather, photos of the nice Jacques set pulled from an auction. I made the same mistake as you in 2005, with a high grade video camera, eBay. I lost the auction, then the seller reached out to me saying the winning bid fell through, do I want it at my top bid, let’s keep it off eBay, and you pay me via Western Union. I did that, and never heard from them again, eBay couldn’t help, no one could help. Never wire money to someone you don’t know. In fact, when I wired it, the clerk asked me if I knew the person I was sending money to, because there were scammers out there- I lied and said yes, later wished I entered into a conversation with him instead, he would have straightened me out, telling me there was most likely no camera, and to buy through PayPal for a guarantee. Sad to see someone stuck with this scam 15 years later.

Truly sorry my friend.

We don’t call Craigslist “crookslist” for nothing!

Sorry to hear this. Craigslist is notorious for this kind of thing. I'm also amazed that no one has come forward to identify this item. A Jaques set with Carton Pierre and matching board would be very rare. Brave of you and others to come forward. Having investigated some fraud one of the most difficult things is to get people to admit they have been conned, because they are embarrassed about it. Believe me it's very easy to fall victim to a scam. All it takes is to let your guard down for a second. Best of luck Ivan and thanks for sharing.

I seem to remember a genuine seller called "Elizabeth" (?) who sold antique sets on the net. Those photos remind me of the photos she used to take. Unfortunately I can't remember the website name or details but someone else might.

Craigslist can be a fine market place, however, always be aware of warning signs.

Always use method of payment that protect you as a buyer (PayPal and credit cards are good... cash and wire transfers are not)

Depending on the level of risk you're willing to take... do video calls... ask to see live views of the product... get photos of ID next to the person's face.

Report fraud to your local law enforcement.  Banks will unlikely share personal information about account holders with you directly, however, will cooperate with law enforcement.  Otherwise, this person will continue to defraud others and the bank will facilitate it.

If somebody says PayPal is not an option, tell the person that you need a payment which protects your money against fraudulent sellers.
eBay it quite safe. I only had once problems in eBay, when a seller didn’t know send me the items. After some months I became them. The seller tried to apologise. He said he was ill. I told him he was not ill to sell the things and to cash the money, and was healthy again after eBay did pressure on him.

Im so sorry this happened to you. I also emailed that guy a while back, when he said no paypal, I realized i had no recourse if he flaked. I also asked him to send me a picture of the top of the board, which he was unable to do... Since he couldnt produce another picture I thought he might not have a set but just be dangling pictures to get some quick $$.

did  report the listing to craigslist as a possible scam, but I suppose I was too late sad.png

Sorry man. I hope you are wealthy enough that that's only a small dent.
