That is a beautiful box. Very classy indeed. My uncle crafted me a box - there’s a thread somewhere here - and because of the inherent beauty in the box - it itself is a display piece. This is the same … for example, this box might be displayed open or closed with a few pieces on the side and on top. Just another way to celebrate elements of your collection. 👍

Beautiful wood selections and craftsmanship. The top walnut is particularly amazing with the wavey wood grain who's continuity continues through the accent inlays. I wonder where are you storing your Raikis-lei set?
Congrats! The box and set are beautiful. I love boxes that allow the pieces to stand up. It prevents the pieces from banging against each other. I see you bought the Sinquefield set. How do you like the set?
@lotsoblots Since the box is tall enough for the Kings to be standing, I didn't feel the need for felt. It's not like any of the pieces are laying down or rattling around. It's a large display box that will most likely live on my desk.
@RichardHG Yeah. Of the $148.82, sales tax was about $10. And he included free Priority Shipping which cost $30.
@Powderdigit Since the chess pieces will be INSIDE the box on my desk, I will most likely be staring at the box way more than the chess pieces! Hah!

I just received my custom commissioned chess box from Etsy woodworker Jim Carroll Etsy Shop Link To say I'm ecstatic would be an understatement. It's BEAUTIFUL. I love his use of premium grade woods; interesting grain patterns; how the walnut grain continues around the sides of the box; AND ALSO UP the sides, from the box to the lid. Dovetail corner construction. Discrete hinges. Everytime I look at it, I see new details. I appreciate his thoughtful artistic eye.

INTERIOR dimensions: 12” x 9.5” x 4.5". It can fit standing Kings all the way up to the massive 4.4" sets with no problem. Plenty of space to comfortably fit a 34 piece, 3.75" set with room to spare. No having to play Tetris to get everything in there perfectly. With these interior dimensions, the box can also fit Letter size paper, business size envelopes, or serve as a desk organizer.
As a bonus, the packaging was bombproof. Knowing how to properly package and ship is a huge plus. He went above and beyond.
