I am also in my mid sixties. I started playing with plastic pieces. They certainly were and are less expensive.

After playing for about ten years I got a nice wood set. Then I spoke with Frank Camaratta who started The House of Staunton. Well he kind of ruined me so I was only buying and using wood sets.

I started coming to this forum and after about 7 years, I owned well over 35 wood sets.

I started running some chess clubs, particularly scholastic ones. Then I started getting plastic sets again.

Today the plastic set I use the most is the Ultimate Chess set from Shelby of American Chess Equipment, and lately of the Rochester Chess Club.

I also have a couple of Drueke copies in plastic from USAchess.com. I need to pull one of those sets out and use it tonight at my local Chess club.

At this time I can play with either the plastic or wood sets.

There are many great plastic chess sets. And I find nothing wrong with playing a game of chess with plastic chess pieces.

And this is not a either or situation for many people. I own as many plastic chess sets as I do wooden chess sets.

If the design is good and the pieces are well made and have a nice weight. I am all in on plastic and wood chess sets.

For playing a high quality plastic Staunton type set is hard to beat. Then there are more beautiful pieces, but that´s another matter.
