Not sure if that's the right way to put it. Basically I'm looking for a chess program to use on the computer so that I can play through published games. I'd like a feature that lets me "save" a position, so that when I do the fantasy continuation, I can click a button and get back to where I was. A "rewind" feature might accomplish this, but a single-click would be better. Indeed, having multiple boards on the screen at a time would be the best!
I already have some chess software, so I'm not looking for something that has chess playing software-- though if that's the only way to get what I'm talking about, I'd be willing to grab it.
Thanks for any advice or direction you can provide!
I make a lot of use of ChessPad (http://www.wmlsoftware.com/chesspad.html). It has a "View Only" feature that allows you to do exactly what you say--try out a variation and then return to the actual line. An alternative is ChessCat (http://www.chesscat.loncarek.de/), which I find much easier to annotate in.
