Wanted to get market opinions on the new colors of mousepad chess boards we just came out with.  We are Making a Bobby Fischer Style board like the one in the picture with color squares and a line around them.

I saw the board and just had to re-create it.  We made it in Army Green, Burgundy, Slate Grey, purple, and Blue.

These are on my 1/16" mousepad boards.  USA made.

I want all opinions, even the ones I might not agree with!

Just to let you know, the Army Green has been the most popular, flowed by the Slate Grey and the Burgundy.  Here is the link: https://amchesseq.com/collections/tournament-chess-boards/products/bobby-fischer-mousepad-roll-up-travel-tournament-chess-boards-choice-of-5-colors?variant=23488076873786

Did you really need to include the obnoxious Bobby Fischer logo on the h1 square? Ruined an otherwise perfectly good board. Also it’s quite unethical to use a deceased persons name to sell a product. I assume Fischer’s estate will not be receiving any royalties. Shame on you and your company.

Remove the logo and I would buy one.

You should still remove the logo from the h1 square. If I turn up to a game and that board is in front of me I’m calling the arbiter.

Also getting a trademark and ensuring Fischer’s estate are getting a cut are two completely separate things. Can you confirm whether any proceedings will go to his estate?

TimeToResignNoob,

We went through the time to get the trademark for the name Bobby Fischer.  Everything is above board.

Nice of you though to automatically assume the negative.  There are some of us that do things the correct way.

Maybe he didn't assume the worst maybe he just doesn't like how it looks.  Anyway, cool boards but I like dark colors, gray would probably be my choice.  To me the red is too red even though you call it burgundy.  I like a really dark Maroon.  A dark forest green, it a blackish blue Navy.  The bright colors are too "toy like" for me.  Not knocking you because that's pretty much how the whole roll up board market is.  Just because they are cheap doesn't mean they can't look classy.  There's free marketing advice lol!  Just my 2  cents.

I don't mind the logo, I think it looks fine. I'm more interested in how this mousepad board will hold its shape once it's been rolled and stored few times. From the pictures it does seem to lay pretty flat on the table, but does it stay that way?

Great! Still have an original. If some1 is interested ...

I’m a big fan of almost everything you put out there, Shelby. I have 2 of your mouse pad boards that have the simulated wood pattern. Those have been good to me so far.

However, I’m afraid this Bobby Fischer series is a toughie for me.

I understand that you had to spend money to get the rights to put the name on the board. Which puts you in a weird spot as to WHERE to place the name on the product. Personally, I do not like any type of board with a logo on any of the squares. I’ll pass on this one. I would buy one without the logo.

As a side note, I mostly associate Fischer with the standard green and buff, plain old boards with his Dubrovnik set on it. One other thing I strongly associate with Fischer, is his leather insert tab pocket chess set. That’s another market area that chess weirdos like myself would love to see expanded. The current passport style offered by HOS is nothing like the original sets that circulated back in the golden days of the game. If just for the nostalgia factor, I’m sure everyone on this forum would go nuts over it. I think you would make a killing with a pocket set like that.

I think the boards look fine, save for the logo.

Fischer would have hated this, and trying to make a buck off the legacy of someone who became hateful, bigoted, and quite likely mentally ill just feels all kind of wrong.

Well, Fischer would have hated -and actually did hate- way too many things and people in his older years. The game of chess included. That is not a good reason to abandon his chess legacy and leave it at that.

The man despised Kasparov, and yet, Kasparov dedicated an entire volume of his ‘Great Predecessors’ series to Fischer. I for one do not find that “Wrong” in any way.

I bought the book and I’m still enjoying going through it. It is a good product and very useful to the rest of us.

I likewise do not find anything wrong with Shelby actually having licensed the Bobby Fischer stamp legally. It’s not like when we talk about Fischer as a hero, we are talking about the hateful rhetoric he embraced after abandoning chess. What we celebrate is what he did with and for the game of chess. Nothing more than that. His total dedication to his craft, and his laser focus on his goal to become world champion. If I didn’t have a problem with the intrusive logo printed unto a square of the board, I would have no moral qualms about buying something made to resemble a piece of Fischer memorabilia.

I don't care for lines bordering squares, any logo on a playing square or dark colors.  Won't be buying these boards.

Bananamoon,

That board has to be 30-40+ years old.  Looks sweet!  How long have you had it?

Hey Shelby,

I exchanged this board for another rollup board a few years ago in a local club because I liked the design of it. This club is playing on these chessboards like forever :-).

I think it looks elegant and cool, but I don't own a PC anymore. 😛

I'm pretty neutral w/ respect to the black lines around the squares, but I do love the vintage double-line borders around the board w/ the alphanumeric coordinates printed inside that border. I would certainly pick up a board that catered to that particular retro-look.

I think I was too harsh in regards to my criticism of the use of Fischer’s name. Business is business. You did however stipulate on your original post that you were welcome to any criticism. So can you please respond to the objection of the logo being placed on a playing square? Would this be accepted in tournament playing conditions?

I played in the National Open in Las Vegas in June and all of the supplied boards had logos in all four corners. Honestly, didn't bother me in the least. Hardly even noticed once the clock started. I thought the boards looked great actually.

The grey board is very nice but spoiled by the BF logo. Keep it nice and clean without the logo and I'm sure you will sell more. Good luck .

Puzzleman66,

I have had very good luck with these.  Just don't fold the board and they will lay down just fine.  Remember, it is one of the thin mousepads, so it will less likely to hold a curl. The thin ones are 1/16 backing compared to a 1/4 inch backing.

Good day Shelby, I just purchased an Army Green version of this board from you thank you. Don't mind the Bobby Fischer Logo at all, it doesn't detract  or deter from what my mission is on the board to achieve a win, suffer a loss or bring the match to draw depending on the strength of my opponent. I can't wait to pair this one up with the new order of cream colored Ultimate Plastic sets you have in the pipeline for your next order from your suppliers, whenever that is given the green light to materialize. I will obtain at least two of those nice looking sets and they will look outstanding on this board. Thank you kindly once again. All the best.

You can offer with logo or not and even different players.  My only question is can it be put in a washer.  My mousepad board can. Like all the colors.
