Anyway, that is a lovely set of pieces, goodnightmike. I don't know if it's your photography skills or what, but the antique finish looks great on those. What a nice set.
Thanks Jon, the antique boxwood finish even looks better in person

Er ist wieder da.
...und das heißt, was?
Soll man deshalb glücklich sein, oder nicht? Fünfzig Prozent klingt gut, glaube ich. Vielleicht gibt es was Geschichte die ich nicht kenne?
Yes. It's really an allusion to the English title of a German satire film and novel about Hitler returning to modern day Berlin. The English title is "Look Who's Back," which is not a direct translation of the German title--He is Here Again. My reference is to Goodknightmike, who has been gone too long from this forum, and whose return is good news for all chess lovers.

Ah-- I see. Yes, I read it as a reference to the book and movie, which are funny and rather unsettling at the same time. Where I messed up was: 1) I mistakenly thought you were referring to Carl's 50% off offer on the set, and 2) Given the subject of that book, I mistakenly thought you were comparing Carl to to AH! I thought, "Gee I don't think Der Führer would give us 50% on a nice set of chess pieces. Seems rather like like a pretty nice thing to do!" My apologies for misunderstanding the reference, and thanks for straightening me out, cgrau!

ARGGGGG. Before you posted this I went and bought the 4.4" Antiqued set. For that price I certainly would have been happy with this set instead.
Teaches me never to be so quick on the draw to make a purchase. I guess I'll just have to be satisfied with the fact that I will love the set.

Hey, goodknightmike, you've had this set for over a year now. How's it holding up? Would you still recommend it highly?

Up, this is a great set and such joy to play with. It has held up fine in my rapid games. Recently Official Staunton has made improvements to the Steinitz set including proprietary balance weighting and the antiquing process, which prevents splitting and cracking. So now its an even better set! Yes, I highly recommend this set. Here's a link to the set:

Mike: Did you buy the improved Steinitz set? If so, are the differences significant?
No, just the first version which I'm quite happy with
I bought this set earlier this summer during Official Staunton's 50% sale. It's very nice, probably my favorite non-Noj set at the moment. I see that it has since gone out of stock, hopefully just temporarily.
The set is listed as 3.95 inch, which isn't quite true: The kings in my set are just 3.79" tall, and actually smaller than the kings in some other sets I own that are listed as 3.75". I don't mind, as I generally prefer 3.75" pieces anyway, but it's kind of weird that the Official Staunton web page has incorrect information regarding this.
Earlier in this thread, someone stated that this set doesn't have kingside stamping on the rooks and knights. My set does have kingside stamping. I suppose Official Staunton added that at some point during the last couple of years.
I got this set along with the Robert Fischer 72 Series board, which I'm sorry to say I don't like as much as the pieces. Annoyingly, the raised frame around the board isn't attached to the board, which makes it difficult to lift the board, and causes an annoying rattling noise when you put the pieces down on the board unless you are careful to do it extremely softly. The board surface is also a bit too smooth. The pieces glide around with very little friction, so little that it can be difficult to move the pieces correctly during fast games. The board looks awesome, but the playing experience isn't great.
Some photos:
I like the frank, honest, plain look of the pieces, which is powerful in its own understated way. But what bothers me is the excessively wide opening in the bishops' mitres, which makes them look as if they were designed as cigarette holders or something. If only they could close that up, I would buy the set, but as it is, those gaping mitres would just distract me throughout the game.
My understanding is that the wide mitres is a common feature in the earliest Staunton piece designs. The Antique Steinitz set, as the name indicates, tries to resemble these early designs. A couple of other odd archaic features that I don't particularly like, but also don't mind much, are that one knight and one rook for each side has a king stamp on them (used to indicate the kingside pieces in old-fashioned descriptive notation) and that the white pieces has a fake, artificially dark "aged wood" color.
Er ist wieder da.
Danke!
