Old boards from chess club Bern

Recently I went to a little shop in Bern searching for interesting old chess items. Actually I didn't have much hope to find something. But surprise surprise: the women had once a restaurant where the chess club Bern played chess. She said that also Korschnoi came sometimes to play (but in a separate room). Anyway, when she closed the restaurant the club gave her several old boards and sets.

I bought from her 5 old wonderful tournament boards and a chess set for quite few money. She was just happyrhat a collector was interestedin the stuff.

This kind of thing happens very very rarely. I just love the boards, they have a beautiful patina.null

Excellent find! The board in the photo looks great! Are they all similar?

torrubirubi

Yes, all the same type. I still have to find a place where to put the boards.I guess I will try to sell most and keep one or two of them.

Hello,

I am also a chess collector and live near Geneva

does the lady have more chessboards ? Is possible to have the adress ?

I used to play in that club at the Krammgasse

how much do you sell one ?

Ronbo710

Great boards, A lot of history there. Do you have any pics of the pieces?

torrubirubi

Fzutter, I bought all boards. I payed very few, something like 25 SFr each! Nothing if we considered the age, the quality and the fact that some have a little metal  plaque with the words „Schachklub Bern“.

Ronbo, the pieces are rather new, conventional, no patina. They don’t belong to the boards, unfortunately.

fzutter, what do you collect? I collected too much, without a focus. I am specially interested in old Staunton, and all kind of pre Staunton. I have quite a large number of sets, clocks, boards, and books. I have some computers, like a Novag Adversary (working and in perfect condition). Do you have contact with other collectors in Switzerland? Is somewhere a group meeting from time to time?

@torrubiribi. I collect all sorts of chess books, preferably old ones and not technical ones in all languages and chess sets, also preferably old ones.
I would be happy to buy one board with a schachklub bern plaque on it. I live in the canton of Vaud but my family originates from the canton of bern.
Unfortunately there are no meeting for chess collectors in Switzerland. I am a member of Cess Collectors International Their webside seems to be down, but you can have information on http://www.chess-museum.com.

I don’t have many old books, but some are nice. For example, I have a copy of El Sabio‘s Libro de Axedrez, Das Schachzabelbuch, 1941. I never find a copy in internet to be sold.

I have also Paul Morphy‘s Schachspielkunst (1864), Beiträge zum Schachspiel (1833), and some rare tournament books. I had also a very rare and signed book by Aljekin, but I sold it to a collector from Canada, a guy specialised on Aljekin.

Look, three of the boards have the plaque, so I could sell one.

Lucky you ! I am looking for Das Schachzabelbuch since a long time, especially since it was published in Switzerland

I have a facsimile of the book of Alfonso el Sabio published in Spain in 1987.

I baught today (!) Deux cents parties d’echecs, 1936, signed by Alekhine.

Is it a possibility to converse privately on Chess.com ?

Interestingly,  some days ago I was in an antique shop in Bern and found another board, also with a metal plate.  The board is not in good condition but the price was very low, so I can't complain.  If you are wondering,  I am Torrubirubi,  I did a new account.

Drachennest is a shop, not specialised in chess but with nice chess sets and boards. Or perhaps I can sell you something,  I have too many boards and pieces.

That would be so great!

Wir können uns einmal telefonieren . Suchst du ein Brett mit Turniergrösse? Oder was kleineres?

jericoluislua
Ja Turniergrösse wäre etwas

Crazy, I just found a further board from Schachclub Bern, in a flea market in the city of Thun. I ask myself how many of these boards were used in this chess club. Let me know if you have any information.

Love that board. If you have any interest in shipping and selling up someone in the USA, I’d pay a very fair price.

Thanks. I will once begin to sell part of my collection, as I have too much stuff. However, I still have to decide how to do this, as I would like to sell in a more systematic way. Perhaps on eBay. I have a Solora clock, a Garde Electronic clock to sell, and perhaps I will sell my Novag Adversary, as computers are not the focus of my collection.  And many other things. Also books. I will let you know.
