how can you call the man an idiot considering he achieved results?
One good book for an aged beginner

how can you call the man an idiot considering he achieved results?
The book's title is calling the reader an idiot, not the author. Of course, the reader isn't supposed to take the title as an insult.

No one mentioned shlman's stuff's yet?amazing
"The Amateur's Mind" by Jeremy Silman would be an excellent choice for any novice-intermediate player. Very instructive, and one of the most popular chess books for the improving amateur.

Idiot's Guide to Chess by GM Wolf.
In fact, it is a good book....kind of an everthing-in-one, encyclopedic introduction to chess....targeted to the beginner-intermediate amateur chess player.

The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played by Chernev.
Very good book which is written at a level ideal for your skill level.
Chernev is actually pretty good for beginners. So is (horrified *gasp*) Fred Reinfeld.
I wouldn't recommend either one to a player of 1500+ strength, though.
If you were interested in playing through complete Grandmaster games as part of the learning, Seiriwan has a some good books that follow that format: teaching by using full games as examples.
