Sorry I guess I didn't state the question that clearly. I meant one where we can both use together to test out positions etc. Like for example we are now trying bishop+knight ending and it's frustrating to kill off all our pieces before we can even work with it.
Why not play a takeback game?
You could send diagrams made from PGN files back and forth in messages.
Thanks for your comments. But actually someone sent me a message telling me you could use FICs to play it out live. It's extremely frustrating to work that thing out, but once you get it, it's great for analyzing. You can even draw arrows and add circles. Me and my friend were both able to move black's and white's pieces and we could also set-up the board to any position we wanted. It'll be pretty cool if chess.com adds this feature, as it took us ages to finally get the FICs thing to work out, and I still don't really like the board and features.
Note that you can also share your desktop to collaborate over the internet. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_sharing. I use TeamViewer, which is free. You can bring up any chess program (e.g. SCID), and both observers can manipulate it (or anything else on your desktop). You can combine this with video/voice chat (e.g. via Google) and away you go. TeamViewer supports both Mac and PC.
If you use BabasChess with FICS, you can do exactly what you are wanting to do. Use "examine" mode on FICS and there is a button underneath the board for adding arrows and circles. I suspect this what you figured out. If so, if you don't like the board you can use custom board and piece graphics to make it look very sharp. I maintain a webpage of extras for BabasChess here:

Go into LIVE chess and choose Analysis Board from the drop down time control menu.
Then right click on your friend's name when he is logged in, and click 'Invite to analysis board'. When he accepts you will be able to discuss/analyse positions together.
Click on the microphone symbol to use audio via your webcam/headset whatever ot use Skype to chat while you are analysing.

Currently I am having trouble with a student on safari. Is Safari supported for Analysis or not? He cant see my invitations.
Once the shared live analysis game is created, it seems to be "eternal"--if my diamond-member friend fredwilsonchess (Fred Wilson, whom I'm helping, who made master at age 70+, author of 11+ chess books), creates a game and invites a student, the next time he goes to "play" a live analysis board, the same game pops up, still alive. In a real game you can resign; how do you end this game and/or start a new one for a different student? Of course, I know you could reset the game, but that destroys the record of the old game--I'm looking for a different solution.
Is there one for free that I can me and my friend can use? A board that works sort of like live chess but we can choose any position we want and add pieces/remove.
