Out-of-Print Books That Still Have Valuable Knowledge

Hi all,

Looking to learn more about books that are out of print, but that still have valuable information that’s hard to find in any other book. I’m thinking of books like Rowson’s Chess for Zebras, or Baburin’s Winning Pawn Structures — both out of print, both of which have info that is hard to piece together elsewhere.

Any suggestions? And any topic from rook endgames to how to play the King’s Indian to preparing for a tournament — as long as it’s valuable knowledge that’s hard to come by in other books.

I’m also thinking of, for example, the two pamphlets that Pal Benko released on various endgame lessons. Also an example of what I’m looking for.

There's the Rook ending book by Levenfish and Smyslov that fits your specification:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rook-Endings-Grigory-Levenfish-1971-04-22/dp/B01FJ00WTE

Why are you looking for these? Are you thinking of printing them? If so the Braburin book you mention would do very well.

Is this one of the Pal Benko pamphlets you refer to:

https://www.amazon.com/Chess-Endgame-Lessons-Pal-Benko/dp/B000XQ2PXG

It says these are from Chess Life and Review - so anyone sufficiently interested would be able to get hold of them from the archives of that publication:

Note that these are still subject to US copyright law.

The Search for Chess Perfection and The Search for Chess Perfection II by CJS Purdy are two books that were best sellers for their publisher and received high praise from players. I was a proof reader for The Search for Chess Perfection II and was amazed at how much ground it covered and how accessible Purdy's writing was. Plus it had the benefit of having a lot of history mixed in with the chess instruction. Good stuff if you can find a copy of either.

@IpswichMatt - to be honest, I’ve been needing new books to look for when I do my crawl through used bookstores. I’ve had a couple of finds in the past, managed to snag a copy of Najdorf’s version of the 1953 Zurich tournament for $30 a couple weeks ago (!!). Partially a hobby, partially I’m interested in digesting the info (of course).

@RussBell - that Shereshevsky book, I heard that that was included in Shereshevsky Method, is that true? Or is there more info in the one you recommended?

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

I'm sorry, I do not know the answer to that question.

@ChessAuthor I was the cover model for Search for Chess Perfection II. It’s obviously a must-buy!

@Atomic_Checkmate, That's great! Did you know Bob?

I was so looking forward to the third edition of Search for Chess Perfection.

@ChessAuthor I did know Bob. I grew up and live in the Quad Cities. I used to go to his shop all the time and just wander through the stacks. Back in the late 90s, before Amazon was such a thing, it was amazing to see everything he had available. I spent a small fortune with him on books over the years.

I don't think so - but it looks like there is some controversy surrounding this book - have a look at the discussion here

Bob published a few of my chess-related short stories in his magazine, SQUARES. Seemed like a great guy; I only got to speak to him on the phone, never met him in person.

@IpswichMatt no, Bob picked me because I looked a bit like Purdy from that angle. If I remember correctly, Bob had me pick the outfit up from a costume shop the day of the photo shoot.
