Peru chess manufacturer INCAISA. Custom super-wide Rooks. Photoshoot time!

Just received a "semi-custom" chess set from Peruvian manufacturer Incaisa. The Alpha model chess set is their take on the traditional Staunton style.

Overall, I liked the chunkiness of it. Note the big Pawn heads. And the delightful Knights with their pleasant expression remind me of butter cookies. But there were some details with the original Alpha set that I felt could be improved upon. Tweak to the Bishop miter to give it a subtle waterdrop shape. And some base size refinements. The biggest change (LITERALLY) was the size of the Rook. I asked them to pump, pump, pump it up to Sumo-Size proportions as much as possible without it looking out of place. I wanted the Rook's base diameter as big as the King's. That was the biggest I dare go. LOL

34pc set. Wood storage box. Shipping. New Rook development. And various minor tweaks. Total $180usd (shipped).

I present to you, The Alpha Sumo. Enjoy!

Here are the Rooks compared to the NOJ Mincetas. OUT OF THE WAY!! LOL

The fat rooks striking again! And fatter than the Minceta ones! I've never seen this set before, quite nice, the knights remember me the german ones. Enjoy them!

The bischops are really beautiful

A beautiful set indeed, Sir!  You guys and your fireplug rooks, hahaha!  Freddie Mercury would be proud: fat-bottomed girls rule!

Thanks guys. Glad you like my minor adjustments!

As a point of reference, below is a "Before" pic of the original Alpha set by Incaisa. And the "After" pic of the Alpha Sumo. In my opinion, it just needed some refinement. Since he makes the sets to order, he was very open to suggestions. It helps if you speak Spanish. But Google Translate worked fine as well.

The bases got more bulbous and consistent. Bishop top waterdrop shape. Knight front "lip" overhang reduction. And the Rook gained about 100lbs. I know not everyone will like the fat Rooks, I was just having some fun with it  happy.png

I do like the butter cookie knights!  "We'll distract you with our cute while we hop in there and kick your ...!"

Beautiful set. I love those fat rooks! It's incredible that they are even fatter than the Minceta rooks. The set looks distinctively like a Staunton set, but it is a very unique take on it. I will have to check out Incaisa and maybe order myself one.

Wow, these ‘turned’ out great! I love the adjustments overall. The original design looks perfectly fine, but the adjustments give the pieces character, and a certain charm.

To get the pieces at the price you did only makes the purchase even more amazing.

Congrats!

Very nice photos and thank you! The Alpha Sumo set appears to have come from other-worldly planets with greater gravity force. wink.png Appreciate the sharing of pictures!

This is my second time collaborating with a non-native English speaking craftsman/artisan for a made-to-order chess set. I should've taken more language courses back in school. In these cases, a photo is worth a thousand words, so to speak. For those interested, below are some "b-roll" photos during the development and manufacturing process.

The original base diameter size of their Alpha Rook was the same as the Bishop/Knight. I used some crude cut and paste actions to visualize the potential sizes. Go big or go home. Let's go King size.

Sometimes, just a tiny adjustment makes all the difference. This subtle sloping waterdrop peak was very hard to convey in simple language using an online translator. This photo was incredibly helpful.

Their standard box could not fit the XL big bellies of the Alpha Sumo Rooks so a new box with extra large dimensions had to be custom made. No extra charge.

I would also like to note that the International shipping packaging was some of the best I've seen. Every piece was individually wrapped inside the box. And every little nook and cranny was stuffed with styrofoam cut to fit. It was then all sealed tightly in plastic. Solid as a rock. Gracias!

Now you’ve done it @Pawnerai ! Showing the wood blanks, very clever of you. I  haven’t yet ventured into making pieces, but you’ve stirred my addiction for saw dust on this lazy Sunday morning. wink.png Guess I’ll be heading into the wood shop very soon.

@Wits-end Color me envious. Get those creative juices going. Make that sawdust rain! Haha! Good luck.

Here's the Big Boy next to the Ultimates v2 Rook.

@Pawnerai, i sold my lathe to make room for other new wood shop “necessities.” I’ve regretted it ever since. My wonderful wife has kept saying “get with it, when are going to get a new lathe Mr. Wits?” So, now it appears you’re conspiring against me. Okay it’s time count the digits for later comparison. Equal numbers equals wood shop success! happy.png

@Pawnerai I would rename those rooks Fat Joe and Big Pun. Very nice addition to your collection.

Ha! I did investigate a lathe but alas… no. A pipe dream …. I’ll look for a local Men’s Shed first and learn how to hold a hammer and chisel… 😉

It is a shame large swathes of salty water lay between me and woodworkers like Jacmeter, Bryan H-W and the good man Wits…. I can imagine visiting with a few beers and watching them ply their trade and I reckon a couple of collectors here will end up with custom pieces from Jac and Wits too.
