Here are some pics. The board looks much redder in the pics than it really is. The dark pieces are like chochlate.

I rubbed a little bit of my boos board beeswax and mineral oil on the pieces which gave more depth to places like the knights mane, top of the rook, places that were carved.

The pics don't reallly do it justice. The only "flaw" was the dark cross finale was a little loose. I put a couple layers of clear fingernail polish on it, then when dry rubbed some diatomacious earth on the stem (so it wouldn't bond to the piece) and it fits fine now.

I prefer my kings to be distinctive from the other pieces so I used the cross finale, it also comes with a peaked one.

The letters and numbers appear to be decals or painted on, but are flawless. I am assuming the squares and stuff are veneer due to the pricepoint but they look really nice.

It's my first "real" set aside from my thornwood african one, which isn't practical to play chess with. I'm going to sell it on ebay or something.

mcostan - What size is that Zagreb set. I just got one also, a smalller one that is perfect for studying and playing at my desk. That one looks very nice.

That looks nice. I've been going back and forth as to whether or not to pick up this set. I'm not that big a fan of the CB Dubrov knight (as I am of the Zagreb), but CB has been putting their Dubrovniks on sale for a while now.Undecided

mine is the one with the 2.87 inch king and 1.75 inch square board. There were a couple sets that interested me but I wanted a smaller sized set. Plus I liked the knight.

I do say, RonaldJosephCote, I'm a sucker for unique chess designs. This one catches the eyes nicely. =D

How much did it cost you?

I just ordered another chess set! The economy bridle one from chess bizzare. I like the size of the zagreb one so much, I did a search of other pieces that would fit that board. I was surprized that the ones I liked the most were in the economy section.

I don't care for open mouthed zombie knights, I probably wouldn't have noticed if I had not read that description from others. Plus I was wanting a set with a normal staunton bishop (with the miter).

I put my african pieces on ebay to offset the costs. It's not like I can play chess with them and I don't have room to display them.

I might get another board if they sell for much. Or some more books. I'm just hoping they will sell.

Tonight when I was analysing a game in one of my books I set up my magnetic board as well so I could play through alternate moves without disturbing the main game. That's when I realized the benefit of using more than one board at a time. I dislike playing all my chess on a computer.

My attempts at finding a local club have not been successful. Chess seems to be unpopular around here. I don't understand the appeal of computer gaming when things like chess exists. My other favorite game is texas hold-em, I only play that in real life as well.

I think there should be chess tournaments online, much like the poke ones. Well, more like golf I guess, the players would have to be away from the commentators.

Someone in another thread was thinking that the recent chess movies would cause a resurrgence of interest in chess but I really don't see that happening. People don't seem to have the attention span or the ambition to learn something without razzle dazzel graphics.

Anyway, when my new pieces come in I can post some comparison pics between those and the zagrab ones. I will probably get a board without notation someday, I'll have all the bases covered.

Minimalist and sexy!

I bought the CB Shesham Dubrovniks for a friend's Master's (cand.scient) gift; I've been envious of that gift ever since.

I've wanted a soft green/white squared board for some time with a set of CB dubovs. It's nice to get an idea of what such a set would look like, although I think I'd buy the black/boxwood not the shesham/boxwood set.

Great looking set-up. No idea which game it is. How do you like the board? Do you own an original Drueke board? If so, how do they compare?

Black_Knight_Tango

The quality of the new Drueke boards are sub par. I got it thinking it would be like the original boards but they are nothing like that. I don't like it.

I'm getting a new custom made board from mtm wood. I will post pics when I get it.

I have four original Druekes. 1-2.25" I bought in the nineties; 2-2.0" vintage boards; 1-1.75" vintage board. One of the 2.0" boards had been refinished, and poorly. I'm thinking of sanding off the old refinish and refinishing it. The other 2.0 board is developing a nice patina, as is the 2.25" board, though the larger one is further behind in the process.

My first set (other than the miniature multi-game pack with chess, checkers, backgammon etc...) was bought on a holiday in Turkey many years ago. Marble with an inner gold coated edge, 37cmx37cm overall and 26cmx26cm playing area. King is 6,3cm.

Second set is a wooden foldable travel set of 26x26cm with room for the pieces inside. Magnetic pieces makes it brilliant when playing on a bus or plane :) King is 4,5cm. Metric all the way ;)

Of the two I kinda prefer the travel set as sssome of the marble pieces wobble a tiny bit. After looking through the sets on here I definetly need to look for a proper wooden board :)

I seem to be the only poor sonuvab* around here who doesn't own any "classic" sets nor any "carved from petrified mammoth scrotums", as @SixRavens so eloquently put.

But I do own this hella cool one from chessbazaar.com that I got on one of their eBay auctions:

This is an official image from their site. I'll post one of my set when my board arrives. Laughing

How many kings are there? 4?

What set is that? It looks like a mashup between a Zagreb set and a Dubrovnik.

@ FBeyer

You made me laugh man Laughing

1. Board custom made by a Thai guy, I learned how to do it by internet, wood aged on his farm for more than 30 years, no warping. had to use 10 strips of wood, 5 dark, 5 light, then joined then cross cut and flipped to finally make a 9x9 board. Frame and backing board is Thai Teak :)

2. Two indian clones of Zagreb were used to make the set, House of Chess I think, took ages for them to deliver, had to chase twice.

3. General made from King, cross removed and replaced with round finial (spelling?) from extra Queen, General moves just like the King.

4. Then stole 1 pawn from the other set to make 9.

5. Then stole 3 pawns, chopped the heads off and rounded the collars to make the scouts.

6. Squares 50mm, Borders 50mm, Total width 550mm, Height 18mm, Weight: HEAVY.
