One thing I've learned from raising two children and having five grandkids. It's not easy to reason with a child.....The long winded explanations almost always fall on deaf ears and in this case are a total waste of time.
Post Your Chess Sets
Can we please just stop. This is meant to be a thread for people posting their chess sets, not a debate on the merits of Noj or who's trolling.
If people want to discuss whether Noj is worth the money, I suggest a new thread be started for that purpose rather than cluttering up this one.
Not to mention he'd be all over an Noj set if he hit the lottery. These past knocks on Noj smack of pure envy!
A lot of drivel to skip. The same refrain has been sung many times in many variations here. The right price is ultimately what someone is willing to pay for it. There is no economic argument. If it makes someone happy, and he has the means, he will buy it. Cool. Personally I feel a bunch of wooden chess pieces should not cost more than 500 usd, but that's just me.
@DesperateKingWalk Stop Whining.
There are mangoes available for $0.5/kg and $3,300/kg.
There are people who says that the $3,300/kg mango is worth every penny they pay. They have their own reasons. They will say that the even colouring, the texture of the skin, the perfect shape, the size, the effort the farmer put to grew it, the way he cherry picked the pollen grains and helped in pollinating the flowers, the time he spent in protecting them, etc, etc. as the reason for the high price.
Likewise, these people likes the craftsmanship of the NoJ and consider them as something superior and they are just willing to pay x5 the price of others. Because they want those perfections. It may not be the PERFECT but in many ways perfect than others. For example, if you keep some 10 Dubrovnik sets from different manufacturers and ask you to pick the best one (price is not a factor), even you may pick the NoJ set. Thats what they are trying to say. They are willing to pay the extra bucks for the best of the lot.
We are those people who are like "I don't mind if the pawns are just 5g lighter or heavier than other. I don't mind if one rook is 2mm taller than the other which is unnoticeable to the human eye. I don't mind if the set is made with different log as long as they look okay, etc, etc."
Its not about affordability. Its about personal preferences.
"The labour charges, cost of living thing" -> those are all true. And also, "thats not the consumers problem" -> is also true.
NoJ is for targeted customers and the CB, RCM, HoS, etc. is for general customers.
Even if I could afford, I won't buy a $1,400 NoJ set. I would be content with a $85 RCM Dubrovnik set. Its not worth the money. Thats just me.
But its purely personal preference. Which you value more?
Some thinks "Is it worth the money?" and some thinks "Money doesn't matter. I want the nicest one."
@Martyn-n and @Mohan_Kumar_Chess, I think both of you summed it up pretty well.
@Mohan_Kumar_Chess I can understand you won’t buy a Noj set because you don’t value the perfection and that it would not be worth the extra money involved. Kudos to you for that. I definitely do not have a problem with your thoughts on the matter or your chess set selection. In fact, I would probably admire your RCM set because I like chess sets in general and a Dubrovnik chess set is one of my favorite designs.

Yes would agreed with all of you , My taste is of the vintage & antique sets of the Staunton design , I really now am very thankful for the QG craze , Due to the rise in price's of everything chess be it of the vintage / antique kind , I no longer can afford to buy them at today's market price , So i am now very happy with what i have , From time to time i look at soviet vintage chess sets, Yet again the prices are to high for what i would like to pay also most have some kind of damage or replacements + with import tax / vat too much of a risk .
Still many members here, have very fine chess sets & over the years have learnt a lot ,
So nice to see the reasonable, polite crowd back. You're the folks who influenced me the most and it's reflected in my own personal enjoyment of the sets I own so far.
"Eyechess",it was your thought provoking and interesting take on the virtues of owning an Noj set that brought me to get one. My wife wasn't too thrilled about the price....even before Covid when I bought mine and she might not be your biggest fan...ha.
Anyway, I only buy sets that appeal to "me". I learned everything from this forum....I have come to rely on the "finer" folks who post here and I always try to compliment virtually everyone's taste in the chess related products they are kind enough to post.....You pretty much know who you are.....Even if I'm not a fan of a design, I think it's the right thing to just support what others own.....Saying "it's a nice set,but not my taste" is the classier way to go if you don't like something....Some people have no class! My parents brought me up differently.
I have one more set coming in.My last one because I have no more room and a wife who has put up with my hobby expenses for way too long(she's gotten bling to appease this....ha).
The set is "not" for playing, but just for my own appreciation of the artistic appeal of the uniqueness and beauty of what can be made....No biggie though. Yet I like it and it has taken a critical hit (guess who?) when I mentioned it in a past thread.
Am I losing sleep over it....Do I have to answer that.![]()
The HOS Tsarist Russian Set......Coming to me at the end of September......I'll post pics at that time....Maybe!
Even the plastic sets get a display rotation at my joint …I know, I know - what am I doing? The truth is - I like this set. ![]()

Yeah me too. He did a lot of nice reviews.
Any good reason why those reviews links don't open?

Sound just took them down , at some point too much bickering going on with other members , As we know this seems to be a trend that happen on here , which creates a horrible forum to post on . also he had upset members on here by posting photos of dead cats , as he had a deep dislike for them .
On the other side he posted great reviews of his new sets & what good deals could be found at the time .

This is exactly what I like to read.
I bring up my children with the means that are mine. But always with this little trick: you shouldn't say it's beautiful, it's ugly, but rather I like it or I don't like it. And to know if I like it, always ask yourself the question: where I could hang it, put it down, store it, or just could i play with it.
It's a first step towards a taste for beautiful things, but requires the education that goes with it ;-)
And I'll quickly post what I like!
Thank you Walter.....I try to adhere to being polite and complimentary, but did get a bit carried away lately. I'm not proud of it but, I had good reason from previous experiences on other threads.
However....."It's nice to be nice to the nice" isn't it? ![]()
I don't spend my time trying to control myself either, human nature is what it is, we are not machines and when it becomes necessary, putting someone in their place is good for everyone.
And again everyone does their best when it happens, no need to have any guilt, that's life.
Frankly, it's just a storm in a glass of water, so cheers to everyone!
Here is my last acquisition of which I know practically nothing, except that I like it ;-)
I haven't cleaned or polished it yet.
I love pawns that end like teardrops. I love its imperfections, its marks of time.
The chessboard seems to me perfect in its dimensions, i.e. squares of 57 mm for this game, the king of which measures 93 mm.
If anyone has any information to share, I am ready to take it.

What an excellent find. I’d be delighted with such a set. That board is wonderful!
D.K.W. Don't buy an Noj set! Others are happy to do so.....Now go back to your pre school.
