Post Your Chess Sets

Here's the Drueke replica set from CB in ebony and boxwood. The ebony is silky smooth and a pleasure use. To the eye it's no different to the ebonized sets I have but the instant you pick up a piece it feels like partially melted butter. I love it. It's set up on a 2 1/4" HOS olive and maple board.

The bishops aren't much to look at but I'm getting use to them.

The last thing a pawn sees before being trampled!

The queens...The kings are slightly over 4" and with their large bases really stomp around the board in the end game.

Looks absolutely fabulous with the contrast to the board!

Thanks...There's a large Drueke board on ebay now, and I want to start bidding but it's hot out in that dog house this time of year. frustrated.png

I'm not a big fan of theme chess sets, however when it comes to theme set, my favorite is the civil war theme set.

I don't care at all for theme chess sets, but I usually keep them when I'm given them as gifts. Sometimes I like to use them for taking photos.

I have a board that looks like that. My wife bought it for me when I bought a Reykjavik II set.

That one is on my short list! Sounds like a great wife!

I love my 2 year old 1904 Cambridge springs chess set. I have played endless games and still this is one of my best chess purchase. The black pieces are ebonized but they are so nicely done that sometimes it looks better then the ebony sets which I possess...

Very nice Sultan! I love the wide cuts on those bishop miters and the tall manes on those knights. The glossy finish is the icing on the cake! Beautiful.

I love these last few photos.....The Cambridge Springs set is superb as well.

Sultan......I hope you don't leave that beautiful set in sunlight for too long.

Another angle of the Northern Upright by Staunton Castle.

I wonder if this view is neo-colonial? Why expect an Indian chess set to be cheaper? Traditionally workers in India have been paid much less than workers in Europe & the USA, but hopefully in the interest of social justice this is changing. The woodcarvers of Amritsar are known to be the most skillful in the world and indeed they supply the most prestigious chess companies with the best quality sets. I think we should be happy to purchase directly from the Indian manufacturers such as Staunton Castle and to pay at an adequate rather than 'cut-price' level.

Well said and displayed Manfred.  Makes me wonder how CB is doing selling this gem.

An update on the reproduction set The Northern Upright by Staunton Castle: Mandeep has just reduced the price from $500 to $400 (please note these pieces are carved from boxwood & genuine ebony and with a King height of 5" a lot of wood is used). Just look at the lovely dome shapes of the bases! Having studied the photos of the original 1840's set I am still 'blown away' by the faithful precision of this painstaking reproduction. My set is still unplayed due to lockdown but it is certainly a joy to look at. Also, worthy of note is the after-sale care of Staunton Castle; one of the criticisms of modern reproduction sets has been that pieces may be prone to cracking or splitting. When I found a hairline crack in a pawn of my Danum Set, bought from Staunton Castle a couple of years ago, I was sent a replacement pawn immediately free of charge. Personally I value highly this kind of conscientiousness.

Unfortunately, CB is out of stock of these, and have been for a while. I bought one when they first came out. Gorgeous set, well made and well weighted, it’s one of my favorite CB sets, along with their 1940 Soviet Championship set. CB has come a long way in the last 5 years. Of course, they are often not the low priced vendor any more, either.

Surprised they are out of stock (again) but that means there is steady demand on these chessmen.  Like you, I purchased from the early run and am surprised there have been no tweaks.

CB has indeed come a long way, but I'd like to see them improve this particular reproduction.

They seems to be back in stock again.

Excited for a new Blackwood/Olivewood board from HoS to arrive tomorrow.  Wonder which "white/black" combo will look best? I have 6 different options. I'll post comparison pics.
