Nice score!
Post Your Chess Sets

Thanks! It was! I sweated for it though. An hour and a half walking around a giant metal building with no A/C while wearing a mask. We passed a sign on our way out the door that said the temp. was 104.

Thanks MCH818! Yes twanger, I did love it for the few minutes it took to make sure all the pieces were there and hand him my money. After that...not so much! When I was walking away he said "Hey look!!! This one has chess AND checkers!!!" as he waved some toy crap game at me that looked like it was made for a four year old. I told him thanks, I'm good.

Ok, just bought my third set in a little over a month. Do I have a problem? Went a little bigger this time with 4.4" king, 2.375" squares. It was their last clearance (1/2 price) Empire Series at HoS. Love the art deco style. My favorite board also.

The empire set is a real beauty. I've been tempted on more than one occasion. Even bought a set once, but it arrived with straight-sided rooks, even though the pictures on their website (not HOS) showed flared rooks. Apparently, the supplier had altered the design without informing the dealer. Needless to say, I returned the set. This gorgeous HOS rendition is getting closer, but they're still a couple of design elements I would change to make it a must-have set.
First, those wasp-waisted knights clash with the gentle taper of the remaining pieces, making it look like they grabbed a knight from a completely different set and forced it in with a hammer. It doesn't work for me. As a solution, I would redesign the shaft of the knight to blend more harmoniously with the rest of the set. Given my meager graphic skills, I offer a possible solution.
Second, why is this flared rook shorter than the straight rook? I think it would look better if the two rooks were the same height.
If I was nitpicking, I'd make the pawns a bit larger to better fit the hand.
I know, blame on my OCT (tendency, not disorder. . .yet!). Any thoughts? Such as, 'get a life'.

Each color comes with 4 rooks, so you can use two matching of either style. Size doesn't really matter in that case. But I see your point if you wanted to use one of each. Man its a lot of extra pieces to store when they send 8 rooks and 8 queens!

Yeah, you're going to need a BIG storage box.

Man, I love this set. It was love at first sight. I actually prefer the straight rooks and as for the queens, I like the ones with the sunken heads. The knights do look a little out of place and I don't just mean the pedestals. They really need a total rethink. Still...it's a BEAUTIFUL set and I'd have it in a minute. Alas...so many sets, so little money. Congrats ckaszas, and thanks for sharing!

chessbazaar version has straight rooks. No doubt, HOS version is equally good ...

I had not known about the Empire set until now, and I like it! It is remeniscent of the NOJ BCE pieces a bit.
I wonder where this design comes from. And I wonder how 2 competing companies can see the same design and call it by the same name. I guess that neither of those companies came up with the design or the name, because if they did they would have some copyright rights?

Yes, but the chessbazaar queens are a deal breaker for me. The ones that HOS has that don't have the head poking up through the crown are fantastic. It's just my opinion, of course.
forked again...I had the same thoughts about copyright infringements when I first looked into this set. Apparently it's the wild west as far as India is concerned. The HOS website claims the set was designed by Camaratta but the Chessbazaar site makes no reference at all to it's origin.
A while back I came across a glass eyed knight set from HUK. I posted some pics in another thread but not this one. Saturday I found another at a flea market for a whopping 20 bucks. I'll just show them together here but not in a lot of detail. I'm just not feeling it today. The glass eyed set is on a Drueke with 1 1/2" squares and the new larger set is on a board with 1 3/4" squares.
