Ok, so today is my birthday and one of my gifts (one I picked out) was this 12 in. magnetic travel set with carrying case from the Chess House. It's very nice considering the cost and the pieces stay put even if the board is turned upside down. The board is beautiful. But very quickly me and my wife noticed an unpleasant odor which seemed to be coming from the carrying case so I stuck the case out of the way to air out. But the odor was stronger coming from the board! Apparently the felt covering and glue is the source. It seriously stunk up our whole apartment. I went to their website and read more of the reviews and found one guy put his in the garage for a week after an application of vinegar (Chess House staff advised this) and it was still unusable. I sure wasn't expecting this. Sooo... this one's going back. I'm not willing to wait weeks for it to off gas. I don't even have a garage LOL.

I own that same set from The Chess House.  I also just bought the Sheesham version from The Rochester Chess Center ( chessset.com) at a better price.

The smell was not there in either of mine.  Yes, The Chess House version I bought last year.  So it could be that specific set.

I got the brown version because of better contrast while playing.  In fact tonight I will be using it for a Game 45 45 league game on the internet.

Good luck.

I paid 15€ for this little set, and I’m quite enchanted with it <3

Can anyone tell me anything about this set?

“Honestly, I love studying chess more than I like playing it. I really like looking at a position and trying to understand the logic behind it.”

I am exactly the same and have discovered and signed up for correspondence chess, the real thing not daily type chess here. You may want to take a look. I am playing a friendly with one of the organisers to see how it goes and so far loving it.

It’s with ICCF and engines are allowed. I used to be of the same point of view of many that what’s the point. It’s just engine against engine or who has the more powerful computer, however, that’s could not be further from the truth and I totally get it now and why it’s really popular.

Loving it :)

Love the chess sets! Hungarian, Spanish, Czech, Soviet, German, Maybe a Vienna Coffehouse but could be a Czech Coffeehouse set also, Dubrovnik.

I own a dozen or more chess sets. This is my favourite.  I bought it on ebay 15 years ago who said it was antique boxwood and lignum. Some minor damage to the pieces. White king is missing the cross. I bought the chess board box

from Tasmania from a hobby carpenter who used locally sourced wood.

@yaozhan nice set! it has so much character

I can see why you like it so much.

IT looks a lot like the one on this link (not exactly the same but maybe an old version):

Getting a little annoyed at Chess House. 10 days and 5 requests for a return label and still waiting. They said they're busy but if so maybe hire extra help. Just saying they're busy doesn't cut it in my world.

Okay, thanks, my mistake. Seems like a very late response to the thread title, then, if that's what it was.

Who's talking about late?

My first chess set that I have purchased myself. Chess Empire Supreme Bridle Staunton pieces, with 4" King, paired with the Chess House JLP Queen Anne Board.

yaocly
