Post Your Chess Sets

I see. But you as importer of violins, wouldn't they tell you how long they have aged the wood when you ask them? I think you're entitled to know that since you're the one that has to sell them no?

you miss option 3, violin seller lol

That's why I have a chess rating here only of 1000 ... because I miss a lot also in the game :-)

@mr M, you should visit Sound showroom when you're in the area. When you buy a violin you can choose a chess set for free happy.png

Do you mean Minuskel with Mr M? Yes, this would be a great Idea. But I play piano and no string instruments. But when there is a chess set held out in prospect, I should consider learning the violin :-)

@Minuskel - I import and sell string instruments, I don't make or play'em. I know enough professional musicians who play them for me.

Strangely, I've never had a crack in any chinrest, peg or tailpiece on an instrument (usually ebony) in 17 years,and they're no more massive than chess pieces. Must be the weighting then.

@sound67 Interesting. I had looked up the weight differences between ebony and boxwood and kept running across articles about violin and cello tailpieces. But I thought that the articles said boxwood was preferred because of weight, tonal quality (related to weight?) and smoothness. Is ebony actually preferred?

Don't get me wrong, I loved "the queens gambit", but as a musical?

If a docu about the sexual behaviour of mealworms became a hit, they would turn it also in a musical.

Plus there's already a musical about chess (called "Chess", I think). I know this because when my colleagues knew I'd taken a day off work to go to London to watch a game of the World Chess Championship match in London, they pretended to misunderstand that I'd gone to see Chess the Musical - and bought me a mug which I now have to use for my coffee in the office. With this on it...

@IpswichMatt

Yes, I read about this in the artical on chess.com, that there was already a chess musical.

Interesting story with the misunderstanding, IpswichMatt :-).

I'm sure, that the makers of  "The Queens gambit" musical will find a way to present the chess scenes in a way which fits well in a musical. The story besides the chessgames might be okay for a musical, but the games itself can be challenging, I guess ... but it is not impossible.

I guess you have two present the story in a different way, to make it suitable for a musical,

Because I was a bit of topic, I present now one of my travell sets. A tiny magnetic wooden chess game. As you can see, the bishop has also a brain amputation cut. For the size imagination I put my hand in there, I bought this approx. 20 years ago.

Btw, the cardboard boxes for the pieces weren't icluded. I've made them by myself.

@verylate

Thanks! Yes I like it and it is also well playable. It is very handy in the summer for instance, when you are going to the park meeting friends and perhaps playing also chess. Usually you haven't enough space in your rucksack for a big chess set, when already a waterbottle, a sweater and a book is in there.

Minuskel

silicon boards are also handy for a travell set, but then you need a table. This one you can use on the lawn or on a meadow.

Gotta be 40-50 years old by now but here is my very 1st chess set (bought with a #62 Drueke board, 1 3/4" squares)... Bought more as decoration than for playability (although many games have been played with this set). Obviously with an Indian/East Asian influence. Heavy  weighted and made of some kind of hard 'rubber', not plastic. Likely of no value other than being 'interesting'

Pictures taken with phone, so there may be a bit of a distortion.

I have that same set.  Where did you get yours?  Mine is the 2014 Sinquefield cup set from CB.

ADDENDUM: Posting here in the forum must have done the trick. I heard back from Mandeep who apologized for the delay and assured me the replacement knight will be sent out tomorrow! You know what they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

MORE HASSLES WITH THE CASTLE.

Staunton Castle, that is. One of the dark knights from my 1950 Dubrovnik set developed a large crack in the base. I immediately sent an email to Mandeep on February 14th and he responded right away saying they would send out a replacement "soon." I waited 10 days, no replacement, no shipping notice. I sent a second email on February 24th, again NO RESPONSE. Today I sent a 3rd request (14 days later!). No telling if or when I'll be getting a response. This level of customer service (or lack thereof) is totally unacceptable! I've been a good customer, purchasing three expensive chess sets from SC, but I'm sorry to say that if and when the replacement ever arrives, I am not inclined to purchase anything further from Staunton Castle until they get the heads screwed on straight! What good is a product guarantee if the manufacturer doesn't follow through?

magictwanger

Hmm?I am on the cusp of getting the Pre Staunton 1900/01 set from Staunton Castle.Now I am on the fence.C.B. is not my favorite vendor,but I like that set.

Buying a chess set these days is such a crap shoot!....and....That's really crappy!

Hope you get the deserved customer service.

I'll hold onto my money for a while,as I ponder switching to my # 2 choice,when it's back in stock.... C.B.'s 1951 Ceska Kublovska pieces.
