Protect your chess set?

My 2 HoS sets of somewhat higher end quality wood pieces are both stored in lined boxes but neither box has the individual slots for each piece so the pieces get jumbled up and aren’t physically separated. I put the pieces away after every use so they don’t get dusty. The only real concern I have is the king’s filial so I pay attention and put the kings in first then arrange the other pieces around them. Has anyone had any problems with a similar storage arrangement?

Quick question- if you’re worried about damaging the king’s finials couldn’t you take them out before storing them?

Taking them out is a possibility though knowing me I’d likely find a way to lose them. Replacements might be tricky as neither set is available.

With all of my wood sets I layer my pieces and put a square of felt cloth between each layer. I'm probably over-cautious, but it keeps them from getting dinged up.

After looking at chess box's or the storing trays of kind's Then the shock of the cost !

So made my own using thin foam , Then cut out the inlay , use a old  cotten t shirt to cover over the foam.

just need to plan the lay out  &  Ok it not HOS or etc but it cheap & works may redo with some felt later .

Recently saw a medium pricy set, possibly from Official Staunton, that was distressed to look 150 years old. Maybe a few dings isn’t a bad thing! So far my sets seem to have come through relatively unscathed.

Not sure how important this really is.

1. When I place my pieces in a box, some are laying down but I place them in carefully and put the box on a shelf, where it sits, unmoving. Unless you live in a high earthquake area then it should not move about and get shaken, should it?

2. For the removable finials, you may be able to get a small plastic zip lock from a local hobby store, the little ones that are used to store gears in - like this: http://www.hiplasticbags.com/PE-Zip-Lock-Bag-W63_1493.html

For preventing the Queens’ crown from damaging the other pieces in your box, use this tip I posted a while back:
