Seeing as there is no way of checking the claim, I would for one at least question the use of it, as it is clearly on display in the advertising materials. Aside from goading me I would suggest the "Sherlock" comment is quite uncalled for.

He is competing for the "worst spokesperson" of the year award. Attacked me for saying the concept was intriguing.

Well, that is a very measured and reasonable comment from Erik. It would be nice if the the thousands of people who saw the ad on the speed chess championship broadcast knew about it.

If those people are interested enough in the board, then they will make even a tiny effort to find out more and eventually find their way to this thread. If not, they deserve to be parted from their money if it's a scam.

What more would you like? A personal call from Erik to everyone explaining his position on the board? Some people are only happy when complaining.

I just noticed that Regium is the sponsor of today's Chesscom speed championship match. Interesting.

HemiCinder

As much credibility I would like to put in that sponsorship, anyone who wants to put out the money for the advertising spot can be the sponsor.

So.... let me see if I understand what happened here.

1. There is a thread on chess.com critical of Regium.

2. Regium gives money to chess.com

3. Now the chess.com boss is very excited about Regium (while still knowing nothing about it)

Anybody that is dumb enough to back this kickstarter deserves to have their money stolen.

That's not totally accurate.

1. There is a thread with questions, postulations, criticisms, concerns, and opinions. I clarify that while we are not working together, this could be an amazing chessboard, and we have talked about working together, though we have not seen the board, nor have we created APIs to support it working on our site.

2. Regium sponsors our events.

3. I reiterate that while we are not working together yet, this could be an amazing chessboard, and we have talked about working together, though we have not seen the board, nor have we created APIs to support it working on our site.

We HOPE that this works as advertised, but we have no in-person proof that it does. As with all new technologies and kickstarters, everyone is free to give opinions, speculate, and support it or not. That said, as with many online forums, the amount of conspiratorial conjecture is high  .

I am hopeful that within the next few days we will all be offered irrefutable proof of this awesome technology. If it isn't presented, then that should be reflected in the lack of Kickstarter support. If it is presented, then that should also be reflected with likely strong Kickstarter support.

I don't think anyone doubts that this would be awesome to have. And, I, for one, would REALLY like to see it work! However, we do not endorse this product, and are not trying to convince anyone to back it. We are a platform for chess players, and they are a chess company that wants to advertise and build something awesome for chess fans.

There are really only a few options here:

1. This is an outright fraud, done with CGI, tricks, etc.

2. This is an amazing concept which has a working prototype, but may fail due to cost/difficulty of mass-producing it.

3. This is an amazing concept that will become a viable product and make everyone who buys it happy.

Those are just the realistic outcomes and possibilities. Now, how you allocate the % chance to 1, 2, and 3 above is just a matter of opinion at this time. I'm hopeful that the Regium team will do everything in its power to remove option 1 from the realm of possibilities. And once they do, consider me a backer!

An excellent summary of the dilema and one that reflects my own position. I hope the Regium project is successful. It would represent a significant advance in the eboard arena if it can be brought to market at a reasonable price. But I still have one or two doubts.

Erik, Regium still state clearly on their website that their eboard is "supported" by Chess.com (in addition to other playing sites). Do you think this is an accurate description or are they jumping the gun a bit?

BaronVonChickenpants

Careful @audioq, some people don't like you pointing out untruths about Regium!

MikeSailer
Thank for the information Erik. I just assumed the board was a little further along in the implementation stage given the hype and advertising message. I really think Chess.com should make it more clear that the board currently doesn’t work on your platform. All that being said, I hope this technology works, Chess.com is able to develop a stable api, and the price point is within reason. Playing functional online blitz with an actual board would be very enjoyable.

You do know Mensa is extremely watered down and the most important criteria is the 40 EUR membership fee in Spain?  You don't even need an individually administered IQ test to qualify...just submit the test you use to apply to college.  They do have a good spokesperson and get a lot of people to sign up.

Regium does not intend to gain credibility by sponsoring an event, it is only publicity so that people know the project. Regium's credibility comes on the other hand. I am sorry but I cannot repeat everything that has been discussed in this forum.

You have your answer in the post #238.

"Regium does not intend to gain credibility by sponsoring an event"

How on earth can you know that? For an actual fact rather than just wishful thinking?

It's your opinion, don't state it as fact

No, that doesn't answer it. That's actually the root of the question. The interview says they they expect it to work. They advert says it /does/ work. These are different things.

The intention of all publicity is to advertise the product so that people know it.
