Though Carl's is very nice looking.

Seen that one too and OS set is still head & shoulders above that one although not a bad set for $99. Rather have that one than the other one on eBay.

Chess sets are like potato chips.

You can't have just one ;)

And the OS set looks yummy. I just wish it was a tad lower in price.

As a side note, and this might be a dim question to ask, but why is the felt black underneath the pawn in one of the images? It also seems slightly thinner than normal green felt?

TundraMike

Hi Mac, points taken you cover. Let's see if Carl gets quotes from China and if they can duplicate the quality of the UK.  Sometimes when you go to a Chineese manufacturer you have to commit for a lot of product, have no idea about chess pieces.  Carl's set is classy and no one has anything that looks as nice, that should be some kind of a premium. Anyways we shall see. It does look fantastic (Carl's set), that I know as I still have my eyesight.

I also own that set from China and posted my review on this board.   It's a good set, and I believe Carl could see about getting the resin sets weighted in the same manner as that set which is nice and heavy.

Thank you all, this is vital information from a marketing perspective. It is clear that the UK manufacturing is a no go as it is the reason for high pricing, obviously the UK labour and materials re much higher than China.

For now I am sticking with the UK made set however I will get a prototype from my China Office and compare!!

interesting times guys, thank you all again for your input and allowing the marketing in the first place

hi there -  its a prototype, however we are thiking of having NO felting...we are after all trying to make a reprodution of a Jaques Ivory set :)

GM4U

this resin set (below)  is from a company called Authentic Models, this set launched a good few years back and its RRP then was over the £100 mark. I beleive its made in China too.

Now on offer at Amazon:

We have reduced the price of the 1851 repro resin set to £99.00, thats the best we can offer for a UK manufactured set of this material and style/size. There will be no presentation box at this price though.

As mentioned in an earlier post we are thinking of having NO felting to these pieces as the early jaques ivory pieces were made this way?

thanks again.

Carl. I was wondering if no felts, would these pieces possibly scuff or scratch a wooden board surface?

Will the production sets look dirty as the prototype does?

A more detailed description on this HoS set would be nice. Weight 1.087? What, pounds, kilos? Are the pieces weighted at all? What's the padding? The size of the pawns? I don't understant why dealers skimp on the details. Do they expect us to spend $100 and be surprised with what shows up? Rather too much information than not enough.

Whew! That's my beef of the day.

I understand your desire to reproduce the ivory set as closely as possible. Perhaps you could include the felt pads separately for those who wish to attach them, so as not to mar their expensive wooden chess boards.

HOS and the link Carl provided for Amazon are the SAME SET, if no one noticed.  Carl I did not know you have a go to in China. Hope they can make it look the same. The prototype from there will be interesting.

Yes. If possible, please post pics of the prototype whether it looks good or not.

we can make them " clean" too.

well i am trying to please all by offering a lower price point. Here in the UK they will buy this set all day long at £129 etc as it is UK made....but that is no use across the pond, especially when there are heaps of Chinese lower priced sets on offer, in resin....so back to the drawing board I guess :)

GM4U

Preferences please ?

Dirty look/finish or Clean ?

Pads or no Pads

?

Old ivory sets had no pads ( Alan is that correct?)

(if pads, they will be thin only, as thick/ green felt doesnt look good on these sets)

aristotele1

Hi Carl,

as far as I am concerned, my preferences are for pads on and for clean pieces.

I was wondering about the mould: does it leave a seam like that on plastic pieces? The reason I ask is that I understand that making the mould is expensive, but maybe once you have it the daily work of printing the pieces is easier to do, if you do not have to clean and polish to smooth surfaces, and that can be done in china or elsewhere.

TundraMike

I would suggest make it just the way you pictured it on here. If that is dirty then is it a winner. The pictures you have are very classy and done well. Pads only so the set doesn't scratch a wood board.
