Should I put my chess set into production?

Wow! thanks tmkroll for your scholarly and helpful (and very very interesting) post on the subject!

Nice post tmkroll:

I actually own the second Russian set you showed and always wondered where it came from (besides Ebay).  Thanks.

@tmkroll, and sorry to LoveMAg for the OT!

Tmkroll, can you post a few more pics of this set of yours. It looks sooo interesting.

<Bishops aside, little pips have also been used as functional marks that have nothing to do with piece signatures. Here is a set of mine, 19th century, probably post-1849, contempry with the early Staunton sets, where pips are used to mark the Kingside pieces:>

thanks

tmkroll

NP. I've got lots of pictures of that set here: http://www.tykroll.com/chess/ebsg.html I don't want to distract from the OP (thus the oppologies for the long posts) so we'll be brief but of course I appreciate the interest.

LoveMagnet

Yes, very interesting post. You could open a chess museum, and it would be more interesting than 90% of all the art galleries I've ever visited. I'd also like to see more pictures of your sea shell set. If you have a picture that is zoomed out a bit more, so we can see all of it?

adamstask

oh brother!

@tmkroll

Fantastic. fantastic pics, fantastic set. Thanks for directing us to your website. I must say, besides classic Staunton, I haven't liked any other sets, except for LoveMag's and this gorgeous set of yours. Its fantastic turning, its an awesome King, a lovely Queen, a fantastic rook, and super pawns. Although the Bishop in that set doesn't make me go wow its certainly a functional, dated, and quaint design. Have I used all the extravagant adjectives in my volcabulary yet!? And your Polish set is just lovely, just lovely. I love art and art museums, and I'd say I agree with LoveMag that your little curated collection that you've put on display for us is just great. Thanks again. :)

All I've got of my seashell set I have up here: http://www.tykroll.com/chess/seashell.html and it's as zoomed in as it is. I probably have higher res originals somewhere but it'd be work to find them and anyway it's exact copies of seashells. Nature did all the detailing.

There are many better collections than mine, Jon Crumiller (many of whose sets are currently on exhibity in the world chess hall of fame http://worldchesshof.org/exhibitions/exhibit/prized-and-played/ ) comes to mind: http://www.crumiller.com/chess/chess_pages/jonchess.htm

as well as the Rochford family who have a smaller number of sets but each one is a masterpiece: http://www.chessantiquesonline.com/

Also Floyd Sarisohn has so many sets his collection is a chess museum if you ever make it out to Long Island. (Though his website leaves much to be desired: http://www.longislandchessmuseum.org/ )

But I like to think I have a few real gems. Some of my sets are the same ones that are in museums. Thank you for the kind comments and good luck again with your designs.

holy culture, batman! Tykroll, you've blown my cultural horizons wide open. Your site is AMAZING! It IS a museum! You indeed have demonstrated that someone of modest means can put together an amazing collection of beautiful chess sets, and I haven't even scratched the surface of your collection.

My friend and I have been looking at your antique Regence set and the travel ivory regence set and going "oooh" \"wow" . (and I'm someone who never gave regency sets a second look before).

Anyone who wants to visit a beautiful museum that is a veritable labour of love should go to Tykrool's site and click on the various headings. There are many hours of pleasure awaiting all of us there.

thanks man. Arno

sorry, the 'travel St. George' set.  Gorgeous. You're a scholar and probably too humble to admit it. I love your captions on your pics. I love the work you've done too, and how you describe it. Its an excellent education. I will no longer refer to "Indian/Mongol sets". I just didn't know what I was talking about.

Sorry LoveMAg for the OT posting. I'll stop. I just spent an hour on this guy's site, and just had to recognize him for his work.

tmkroll

Thanks, Arno. You're too kind. Always glad to hear people appreciate my collection.

@IndyFilm: LoveMAg has answered that in earlier posts. You could look back just about a page or two where he answered that.  Briefly, he will at least make it available on shapeways.com, where many chess sets are available, produced by 3d printing.  The design is what we're working on now.

LoveMagnet

Actually I think that the arrow points more and more towards shapeways. And since that is the case I may as well make a virtue out of necessity, and play with shapes that you would never be able to get out of a mold, and make different variations of the design, which would cost nothing extra to upload.

Also just uploading to shapeways requires less work, which for me is a big deal, because I have a hormonal imbalance, which means that I get exhausted very easily.

By the way, being more interesting than 90% of the art galleries I have visited isn't THAT hard. When I go to exhibitions I usually get the same feeling. You know, this blank "oh well, he encased his dirty dishes after a breakfast he had in the 70'es in clear plexi glass, and called it art" feeling. I still go to art galleries though, because once in a while you see something that is really cool.

This might be a stupid question, but how would you produce this set?  Are you talking about buying chess-making machines, hiring workers, printing boxes and labels, or even buying (or renting) a chess set factory?

Do you have any experience in industry or mass production?

The reality is it won't ever get produced.

As another member said earlier it's nothing more than an ego trip.

adamstask

another one bites the dust. LoveMag, let's lose this loser. This one isn't even creative with his crap!

adamstask

*ignore*

let's talk about the chess set LoveMag has been designing with us, or find another thread more to your liking.

adamstask
