Chesscafe Ebonized International Set:

Can provide more pics of this set by request.

Can you post pictures of the black pieces as well? And these are 3.75 in King right?

Also where did you get that board? Looks very nice with the pieces

I really like post #71 looks like my plastic peices were modeled after ones similar to those, where did you pick them up, is there a name of this set?

Here is the link he posted earlier. I just bought one and it is a nice board with one small issue. The thin border is the same shade as the dark squares. It makes the squares along the 1st and 8th ranks look slightly longer than the dark squares on the 2nd -7th rank.

It makes the squares on both the A and H files look wider than the other files. a1 and h8 look both longer and wider than the squares in the middle of the board.

It is very slight but I see it every time I look at the board. I have not played a game on it yet so I don't know how distracting it will be for me. My son noticed immediately and he is a little OCD, he said he would never be able to play on the board.

Your welcome. I also enjoy playing with this set.

And thank you for your wonderful Youtube video on your Russian Soviet chess set collection. How long did it take you to put this fabulous collection together?

I'll keep an eye out for any chess sets I may see on display when I return to the Philippines. That is, of course, photography is allowed...

GNM, Very nice! What is that last set?

Lou:

The set is from ChessBazaar. Kings measure 4.2" in height. Triple weighted pieces.  Its one of my favorites in my collection.

Loubalch responds:

Mike,

Is that a stock CB set or is one that you had them modify?

If you don't mind my inquiring, what was the added cost (over the stock price) to make up your custom 4" Crimson Dubrovnik set? The reason I'm asking, I really like one of their cheaper sets (one that you own), but wanted to make a few minor modifications. Although I've had a less than ideal experience with CB in the past, because of all the positive sfeedback since then, I'm willing to give them another shot.

Thanks, Lou

It looks like the Chess Bazaar in-stock - http://www.chessbazaar.com/antique-circa-1870-1900-staunton-series-chess-pieces-in-ebony-stained-antiqued-box-wood-4-2-king.html

A nice thing about Chess Bazaar is that all of their (about two dozen) chess sets that I own look exactly like their photographs on their website, something that is often not true of either The House of Staunton or The Chess Store.

Nothing spectacular but my main workhorses are the Ebonised King's Knight Bridle set by The English Chess Co. 3.5" king; the knights have character and I'm especially fond of the high crenulations on the rooks. It's nicely weighted and a fair amount of chess set for the reasonable price paid.

And for display purposes the obligatory and somewhat cliched Lewis Chessmen.  I haven't had a chance to play a game with these guys yet but I think they could be quite fun in the right setting.

I'm currently waiting on a Zagreb 59' set from eBay.  I'll post some photo's when I get my grubby little mitts on it.

This chess set was sent from Berlin, some of the pieces look alike to the ones posted by goodknightmike (1941 Russian chess set)

A beautiful set indeed! What's the height of the kings? Agreed there are similarities to my 1941 Russian set. Thanks for posting

Now those are some Rooks.  All the pieces must tremble when they move.
