Software chess board to follow along with books

Sort:

Hi, I'm looking for a software chess board I can use to follow games in chess books and work on tactics problems.

I've looked at pychess and arena chess.

Pychess looks good, but I don't see a way to enter an arbitrary board position - only pgn, which would require figuring out how to get all the pieces to the position I want to practice (kind of a distraction).

Arena chess looks fine, but I don't see a way to put it in a player vs player mode so I can enter moves for both sides.

What do you use?

Try ChessDB and SCID. Also, I'm pretty sure Arena has that feature, you need to look around more.

In Arena just press the Edit button and then you can enter moves for both sides. I  have been using Arena for years and won't change for anything else. It has few bugs but you learn the ways around them. Please don't hesitate if you have more questions.
