chess program for casual gamers

hi, im looking for a chess program for casual gaming, im not an experienced player so im more interested in aesthetics, usability than other things like game analytics

here are some features i would love to have:

a) play vs my computer mostly

b) automated matchmaking feature to find human opponents online

c) maximum time limit setting for opponents' moves preferrably without limiting my time - i want to be able to set it to 1 second for example

d) vector/antialised chesspiece graphics, no console pixel graphics

e) interface minimization to just the chessboard, no tables, no suggestions, no menus, preferrably accompanied by an 'always on top' option - like Kvetka

f) set chessboard light and dark colors and piece light and dark colors separately, and also frame and grid lines - like Arena

i've tried Chessmaster and Arena which besides missing a few of the features i mentioned they have some serious problems which i'll not mention because i don't want to make a wall of text
Kvetka is very close to what i want but it doesn't have separate color settings for the pieces

i hope you get why these features are important for me
it's 2016, it's ridiculous to still play chess with 80's graphics, i really don't get it, even chessmaster's graphics are garbage while the program is still quite heavy

thank you for your time

there may not be such a thing.   Graphics distract serious players;  I remember trying to play on the fancy wood and marble boards with nifty looking pieces but I always went back to the classic top down black and white flat icon based boards using the classic analysis / newspaper printed pieces.

a, c, e, are available on almost all chess programs.  B is available on many.

D&F may be tricky.   Antialias isnt too hard to come by.

Many of the free programs use sprite type graphics.  That means if you took the images of the pieces into a paint program and anitaliased them, they would mostly be antialiased.  Dunno what that means on a 3-d board though, if that is what you seek.

thesmotis

although i have no idea why serious players would be distracted, you totally misunderstood

i don't want fancy graphics, i just want color customization and antialiasing, i do prefer solid colors instead of wood/marble textures for example especially if they are so fake

let me give you an example

Arena has all the color customization i need, im happy with that

but they are probably using images for the pieces so it's pixelated, what's more distracting than a pixelated image?

(btw what you are suggesting is not possible, as long as they are images and not graphics they are pretty much going to be pixelated at some resolution)

but there are other problems, their translation isn't working correctly so half the menus are still in german...

Kvetka on the other hand has antialiasing, they are probably using graphics instead of images, no matter how big or small is the chessboard it looks fine

but, Kvetka just doesn't have separate color customization for the pieces

i really don't think im asking for something that it's not there, im just looking an all in one program

Oh, I thought you were looking for like chessmaster or battlechess 3-d fancy graphics.   Hmm... I will look thru all the ones I downloaded .. using arena (but an older, working version) but ive got a bunch installed over the years...

Did you have a look at Aquarium? In my opinion it has the best graphics and many useful features. I use it maybe 80% of my time, while for other 20% I use Fritz.
OMGChess14

Lucas Chess has everything except b.

thesmotis

apologies, im having internet connection trouble

everything but b? sounds awesome, i'll take a look into it

never heard of Aquarium, i'll take a look into it too

thanks again

thesmotis

ok so im on Lucas Chess but so far i can't find

- separate color settings for the pieces

- how to get rid of the menus and other things around the board

OMGChess14 are you sure those options are available?

i only opened it now so i'll keep looking but im pretty confident i can't find anything related

You can make the pieces any color you want since they are svg graphics.  Just edit them.  I doubt you will find any more minimal board window than the one in Lucas Chess if you are going to be that picky about "menus and other things around the board."  Good luck in your search.
