Karlth what time control are you using to play on the Square Off Pro board?

I have played 10 mins just like @karlth but generally lose on time. I am not a fast player anyway which could play into this. I like 20 minutes with no increment or longer games. If you want to play a game with a time control beneath 20 minutes I recommend 5-10 second increment to allow time to move pieces for your opponent.

Ok I got my board, downloaded the app. Undid the shipping lock etc. thing doesn’t move. No instructions at all!

No Instructions? Any URL that they give you where you can download or read the instructions?  I can see if hundreds of people are giving this as a gift all the returns there will be. Great communication equals fewer returns. Obviously, they are not savvy with customer service. I wish they would have hired someone to consult with them on how to avoid returns.

I did not have a shipping lock on my Square Off Pro. Did you order a different board perhaps?

Shipping lock comes on the Grand Kingdom set that moves the pieces. There is no shipping lock on the SOP that I've ever heard of. The SOP comes with a getting started guide and a thank you letter from Square off. There really isn't much to it, just download the app, connect to the board and play. I'm tempted to buy one from the same place I got the SOP because I could get it for $347 shipped but I'm not super confident in the longevity of the movement mechanism, plus after playing on a full tournament sized board I'm not sure I could go back to the smaller pieces.

That is all everything comes with nowadays. That should be all you need and I am sure they would probably have an email or URL in case you need further help. Thanks @jimbycat

I thought he was talking about the squareoff pro apparently he had purchased the grand kingdom he should have pointed that out. I should have realized it as I have the grand kingdom was one of first to get one, mine works great. The way shippers handle things in this day and age it was likely damaged in shipping.

Got it to work, but it knocks over more pieces than a drunken patzer in time pressure, lol

Glad you got it working. That's a bummer though about knocking over the pieces. I assume this happens mostly with the knight? Does it help if you have the pieces perfectly centered on the squares?

I heard they’re coming out with a new product for a 25% discount. It will be called Triangle Off.

Where did you hear that?

Avatar of TundraMike

Just received an email that my SOP is coming ahead of schedule, it arrives tomorrow!!  Might not be able to test it right away since our house is full of company.

Yeah after one month. Now I hope the carrying case comes by the end of January as they promised.

Where did you hear that?

Square = 4 sides.

25%off 4 sides = 3 sides.

Triangle has 3 sides.

Joke.

ah lol

Re: Pieces getting bumped/knocked over.

From an engineering perspective, if the motor auto-centered the pieces at startup/reset, this issue might go away. The Fidelity Phantom unit in the 1990s gave pieces a “wide berth” by moving pawns on either side a fair amount, sliding the piece, then re-aligning the jostled pieces. Strategically this is the best approach.

You would think an auto-center feature before the start would be easy to program. Maybe they will head your suggestion. Email it to them and see what they say. Then when they have a fix they can send it out to everyone. Good Luck.

Hey guys, is there anyone owning both the Square off pro & DGT Pegasus and already has a feel of both? I need an honest opinion, which one is better of the two?

I have both. Square Off Pro since the end of October. Pegasus since the 16th. I assumed the Pegasus would be the superior product but bought the Square Off Pro to use in the interim. To my surprise, the Square Off Pro is the way to go at this point in time. If you only have iOS devices, you cannot use the Pegasus on chess.com. Since the 16th, I’ve only been able to complete a game on Lichess once out of a dozen or more attempts. It has been a disastrous launch for the Pegasus.

The battery indicator in the app that constantly reports a full charge for the board is a known bug since release. Hope this helps.

Was that confirmed by a Square Off rep? I've got 41 games on mine so far with only a single charge and it's still going. But I'm thinking now I should probably go ahead and charge it to keep the battery from getting too far depleted.

Yes. Confirmed to me via the in app support chat. I got around 60 games before it started failing to recognize moves etc. App said 100% battery. Charged it, everything was suddenly perfect again.

Hey SOP owners, I have been encountering a problem with my board since I got it (on Thursday) and was wondering if any of y'all know of a fix. The problem is that my board generates a lot of static electricity regardless of what surface it is placed on during use. I've tried wood surfaces and several tabletop surfaces, but often the board is really electrically charged. I've been shocked from touching the board twice now! I can't imagine that would be good for the board's electronics, and the static attracts fuzz and lint to the board surface. Is there a good way to ground the board perhaps? Thanks!

I have not encountered this in almost two months of play. I hope it works out for you.

I would think a very cold climate might generate static during the coldest of winter months. I live in Wisconsin and the humidity level in the winter drops considerably creating static.

That's an interesting point, I didn't think of that. I live in Southern California, so it's not known to be a very cold place haha. It was only around 68°F today when I got shocked the second time. I don't know the temperature when I got shocked the first time though. The current humidity is 46% and the temperature is 54°F. Is that enough to make things/ the air statically charged? Do you perhaps know of a way to reduce or eliminate the static?
