SquareOff Pro vs Chessup vs Chessnut Air

The chessnut pro has some fantastic features and nice interface. But their are major supplychain issues.

I received mine almost 4 months late. The board is nice though.

Hi all. Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I am looking to buy an electronic chess board and set.

Which company should i go for in terms of features, reliability and ease of use.

Square off, chess nut or DGT.

Can someone compare these. Each seems to have their merits and demerits. Would be eager to hear some expert opinion on this.

I have posted this previously, it still stands for me:

I have several, here are my rankings based personal experiences
1. Chessnut Evo - currently the gold standard in my opinion, it includes the tablet attached and uses technology to read the screen, very smooth experience
2. Chessup - solid board, geared more towards beginners but still solid overall. It is a very good play experience
3. Chessnut Air - another solid piece of kit, was my number one before the Evo and Chessup entered the house. A user here has made an extension to play games here without needing the Chessnut app on a phone/tablet
4. DGT Pegasus - decent but was a bit quirky in the past, not a bad one though. Feel like more of a toy that the ones above
5. Millennium e-One - in my opinion more for studying with a laptop. Looks/feels more toyish that the others, still do not like this one that much
6. SquareOff Pro - the worst of the bunch, lots of issues in the last with it (connectivity, reading pieces). It truly is a flawed product, IMHO.
On YouTube, look for reviews by Katzenpapa, Al Su, and ChessNoob (all members here at chess.com).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. It sure is helpfull.

Have both DGT and Chessnut Air for some reason the DGT has castling problem on chess.com where it just moves the rook even when move the king first, but nice for OTB tournaments as a TD both are very good

„features, reliability and ease of use“ Stay away from Square Off!

Otherwise all eboards work great in some areas (online, otb etc.) and have flaws in other. In my opinion to have third party Apps is a big plus because you don’t have to relate on the stock software which is most of the time the biggest problem with the eboard.

Unfortunately, I have to agree.

I so wanted to love the SquareOff Pro. In fact, I bought two and one still sits unopened in the closet. It is just that bad of a product. All my other e-boards range from ok to great.

What with "Gochess" e-board?

An attractive chessboard, at least in theory, following the GoChess Lite (not interested in "Robotics" one) on Indiegogo and I like that but ... still all on paper, we'll see. My interest is in italian Certabo's (from Bologna, known for its delicious food and rich local cuisine), particularly the Aurora Black (square field: 45mm) is appealing, a bit bigger than the Chessnut Air/Pegasus/ChessUp but not as much as a regular tournament chessboard (like the Chessnut Pro). Modding a Centaur with a Raspberry Pi Zero W/H may be an option. Ciao wink

I own a DGT Revelation 2, a chessup and a chessnut air. I would say pure for online play and overal I like the chessup the most. Moves of opponent are clearer than chessnut and the pieces are nicer than the chessnut.

The DGT Revelation is the most beautiful and superior kit off course but for online play there is no really good options (I found at least) which use the light on the board and can play on lichess and chess.com

I must say I use IOS for chessup so I can not comment on the android experience. Which I read had/has some issues.

Kromok2

No problems at all with the ChessUp on Android, does work wonders. Can't wait for lessons integration to be released. Ciao wink

As others have said depends what you want. We have the chessnut evo and the chessup. Honestly we use the chessuo most of the time. We are beginner(ish) level and find it the best OTB or against bot experience- for us.

Chess nut is the only company amongst the 3 which provides the option to use their sensor chip set to make them compatible with other chess set designs other than the designs which are already available from the company.

Their is a nice article highlighting how to go about the process.

Perfect timing to re-raise this discussion with the kickstarter of ChessUp 2. Sponsored by chess.com even. Anyone here getting one (or two)?

I have backed the Chessup 2, despite the fact that chesscom has backed it. That can only be a bad thing. They will ruin the product, just like they ruin pretty much everything they touch.

I got it for use on Lichess, a site that does not try to restrict the use of eboards and allows open integration.
