That's German staunton set. I've come to learn there are lot of hidden beauties among those German staunton variations.
The Five Knights of Lockdown
Without seeming like I'm going overboard and disingenuous.......I friggin' love that little gem!
Here's why....Aside from being about(well almost) as cute as my beyond adorable 4.5 year old grand daughter, who wore me out today while forcing me to play hide and seek at 7a.m.(Powderdigit...You know I'm up at 4a.m. playing here,so how much sleep did I get...argh)
Before the whole Covid scare I loved to go to my local library.Have lunch with it's beautiful garden vistas and study book chess......Did that 3 times a week and always brought a small magnetic set.One that I'd keep in my car.
My set was a bit too tiny, but it worked.
"Yours" would be absolutely perfect and so much nicer to look at.
On Wednesdays there was a chess club going on.I'd play a few times, but could not use my set, since the guys wouldn't want to play with such a mini.
Once again, when I saw your little jewel I thought that would be perfect for study and to offer the guys hanging around(who didn't bring a set) a game.
Big thumbs up!

Updating the thread with my latest additions. While the title of the thread is now slightly misleading - in that it is now more than the 5 knights of lockdown … I feel it is logical that this thread now captures the progression on my collection - amateur that it may be.
The next shots are of the Romanian Hungarian created by Biro Sandor and available here: https://caissa.ro/ChessSet/
Please note:- after purchasing this set - Holger Langer advised that the set is still available from its creator Biro (I unfortunately purchased it elsewhere) but I encourage people to go to the source to which I now intend to do myself when I can convince my wife that I would like to support the creator and buy a similar set but from the source. I also found this video recently and think it is instructive too.

Also. A cheap little wooden set with a 2.7” king to fit the antique board I reconditioned. Really just a stop-gap set before I find some better/older pieces that better fit the history of the board.

Andrei has several very good videos on Romanian chess sets - a clear recommendation!

As I excitedly await a set of Romanian Hungarian pieces from Biro Sándor, I note that some sets are simply for aesthetic display and my wife positioned the board and pieces next to the TV. I think it’s kinda nice just to see the pieces as part of common decor.

Just begging and pleading for some intense yet “friendly” skirmishes. Time to cast down the gauntlet and prepare for battle.

Now that I am collecting more sets - I can see (and feel) the subtle differences between pieces. This heavily weighted set pictured is lovely and great for a slow game with a friend and a glass of wine or whiskey at our sides … and yet, no so much for a faster game … the pieces are a tad heavy, the board’s varnish is soft and dents easily … the glasses of wine, perhaps they end on the carpet? 🥴😀
Point being - I now better understand and appreciate the subtleties - I’m not expert but it’s why I am excited about the Sándor pieces …made by a highly-skilled player and woodworker …. for players … it will be interesting.
At the rate you're going Mr.Digit....There will be more than Five Knights Of Lockdown.....Down the road.

I think Mr. Digit needs to start a sharp little blues band called “The Five Knights of Lockdown.” Take the Gospel of Chess to the masses, spreading en passant and fianchetto to the furthermost corners of the world.

Yeah, encouraging fianchetto might just get you arrested in some states...not to mention spreading en passant. Oh, my!

A recent thread titled: I only need one more chess set… and response from @Eyechess on him moving house and exploring his collection, was a catalyst for me rotate some of my sets …I pulled this Squadron series out of storage …
simple, different, fun. I wrote a thread about it somewhere but welcome back to display Squadron … Aaaaaaattention!! 😊

Oh, my that is a gorgeous set. I am very envious ... That is a set that is on my list but alas I doubt I will ever see one in my hands in the rest of the time I have left on the planet ...

No, not unwell, thanks ...
Just other things that have to take precedence. Thought I was getting quite ahead, then Sunday the inside A/C unit went out, whole thing needs to be replaced ... well, there goes THAT little cushion.
Just thankful we are blessed enough to be able to fix it in these times. But it makes splurge purchases like that get pushed further down the road ... and at 60 years old you really don't know how long that road is ....

Very nice pictures Powder! The more i look at them I’m drawn to their bases. Do they feel solid as they appear to be? I also like the understated knights, they look like what a good steed should be, solid, not unnecessarily flashy, reserved in a crowd yet ready to spring into action upon request. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Richard and Magic,
Cheap and cheerful. I chucked it on my small magnetic board. Looks ok! Better with me than in a cupboard or in a bin, where it was destined. Not one in a million … probably one of a million generic sets … but nice just the same.
