The smell of chess

Getting back into the game after a long hiatus, and I got myself a little analysis vinyl board to keep on my desk. As I unrolled it the smell just brought me immediately back. Sitting here now as I type this i can smell it and it just calms me. What chess smells bring you nostalgia? We focus a lot on the weight of pieces or the sound of a solid wooden piece on a board, but I hadn't thought of the smell of a board being so satisfying until today.

I have noticed some of the woods used in different sets do have a scent on occasion. My Braganca set from Brazil has a slight wood fragrance that I really like. I don't think you can get those sets OR the Argentine Olimpico King sets in those woods anymore due to restrictions. I LOVE them both very much.

Coffee, I like to drink coffee. I like to drink it while playing chess. Chess smells like coffee.

+1 for coffee - but only if it has sugar in it.

Otherwise the smell of old books (since the only old books I read are chess books)

Not so much the smell but I miss the clicking of all the mechanical clocks at the start of a tournament.

Ah Yes...the "tick...tick...tick" of a good ole fashioned mechanical clock.  I miss that too.

I used to love the smell of an old  used records store. My favorite was The Princeton Record Exchange....Old LP's from musty basements and the vintage nostalgia.

The smell of old books in the library.  Pythonesquely Woody.   Chess informants that nobody cared to pick up since lazy readers couldn't understand them then.  Entering teenage when olfactory senses were at their peak.   Too many years ago when the bunny really cared for chess.

I used to LOVE the smell of brand new Informants in the 90's at the tournament book stands, But then I also loved the cool inky smell of the  mimeograph school assignments fresh out of the machine. happy.png

In my case I feel uncomfortable when there is any smell that brings back some memories, even if it is a good memory. I just have very strong aversion to any nostalgia or sentimental attachments because in case of one I’ll be thinking about the past, and another will cause some kind of material attachment to an object.

But if you want to know then the smell I have best associations with is the smell of pine needles from Christmas trees.

Also the smell of new book pages. Old ones too actually, unless they smell like the disgusting old cigarette smoke.
