Looking forward to seeing the revised un-leaded design.

:-) sorry, couldn't resist.

Sincerely looking forward to seeing the Ultimate Chess Set available again!

Can't wait to have these available. Looking forward to seeing some pictures of the prototypes/ samples.

Any update on this? I recently realized this was the set I had been wanting for years, and couldn't find it. Now I know why. I hold onto hope it will live again.

There are two threads on the status of this set, update last posted to the other thread.

Your Welcome!

daver3k

I purchased a set of these back in 1996, when they were "double-weighted". I still have the original box, but I can't track down the set itself. We had a house fire in 2002 and while I'm fairly certain it didn't get destroyed, I sure can't put hands on it. Anyway, really looking forward to buying another set of these - I remember them being absolutely sublime. Thanks for the updates, and keep us posted! Can't wait to give you some money.

Hey All,

We just got the info from my factory overseas about the set.  We will be able to get it over 3 lbs and get the 3.75" size.  I can have samples in a couple of weeks.  We just have to pay for the molds.  We can have the actual product for sale the end of August/early September.

thanks

Shelby

Great news. As someone that's dabbled in heavy manufacturing, I don't envy you the cost of the molds, but I will do my part to make it worth your while by buying several sets.

Keep the colors as the original set or the pieces on the left side of each photograph for the white pieces and basic black, perhaps a red and ivory version would sell well too. That pastel light violet is a no go IMHO Mr. Lohrman.

QtoQlevel3

Understood, do you think what I suggested would be something they would put into production, a red an ivory Ultimate set with the new dimensions and weight upon your approval or is the original color pattern the only color palette in the pipeline right now?

TundraMike

It is hard to tell from the samples the detail of the knight. WIll it have similar lines and groves etc. like the old one?

daver3k

I think these look really good. From the photo it's hard to tell if the king's crown has the same curves as the original, but I trust your word on this, so if you're happy with it, I'm certain I'll be too.

As for size, I don't remember thinking that the originals were too small, but these don't look so much bigger that they'll feel like an entirely different set. I don't have too strong an opinion on this.

Regarding colors, let me throw my hat (and future dollars) into the ring as someone that will buy multiple sets in multiple colors. Natural & black, then natural and burgundy later on down the line? Yes, please. I'll also go ahead and add a library/analysis-sized set to my wishlist. I know from experience that molds are ridiculously expensive and that I'll probably never see an analysis-sized Ultimate Chess set, but if I did, I would snap them up.

Looks fantastic Shelby! Can't wait till you have them on the site again!!

Great to see such a classic coming back to the gate.  Hope it takes the gun like a horse with the most ridiculous name going for you guys.

Another vote for burgundy.

Also good to see genuine UCS knights (along with the rest) the knights on those wood sets look quite different then the plastic UCS knights.

Consider the fact that they are being made a little bit bigger then before a plus.  =)

@ShelbyLohrman

not bad.... King + Bishop + Knight , definite likes for the simplicity of in design,.......

Pawns look stubby though?

RussBell

@ShelbyLohrman

referring to the photos in your post #170 of the pieces (not the uncolored samples).  The knight appears "yellowish" (ugh!) compared to the other pieces (rook, bishop, king, pawn) which exhibit a very nice light tan color.  Hopefully the color of the new (light) pieces will not have such a yellowish hue (which is due to a little too much green in the pigment).

Seems that the pieces have changed enough that they won't work well as replacements for missing pieces in original sets.  We have 20 original sets in our club brand colours blue and yellow. Probably won't need to order for some time but nice to know they're available.

By the way the only piece ever broken was a rook that lost a crenalation. It was re-glued and has been good. They do stand rather more proud than necessary though.

shelby,  I remember some discussion of a larger base, then discussion of taller pieces due to steel weights.

do you have the set dimensions yet? (wider, taller or both)

do the taller pieces also make the new set tournament legal?

will they have a new version name to differentiate from the original lead sets?

thx

alexmares50
