Ultimate chess set

I purchased the Ultimates while debating which wooden set to acquire, and they're awesome! Good heft and the "appliance white" is definitely a "warmer" appliance white than I had anticipated (though I'm sure this comment probably makes no sense). I think I may pair them with a proper wooden board as well, though I have a green/white mousepad board to enjoy them outside when the weather warms up. Looking forward to lots of use!

Thanks for doing the review. Great to hear positive comments about them.

I'm curious to hear some thoughts on the new ultimate pieces. Anyone bang them around enough to see if the weights shake loose? There's an youtube channel called coffeechess that I frequent a lot with none other than Hikaru playing some games with the butter yellow ultimates. They're incredibly noisy. How about the new design?

I have only dropped a king.  It fell over on a wood table, rolled off and onto the hard wood floor.  No marks left on it and no rattle.  I baby even my plastic sets so that is all I have to report happy.png

I am also curious to what others have experienced that have had more abuse.

AlphaMelon,

As the manufacturer and knowing the production process they go through....I would like to know this too.  We changed the production process from the V.2 to the V.3.  The V.2 did get noisy with the loose weights, but the V.3 process has no extra space and the weight is encapsulated on 3 sides (not the bottom) by the plastic of the piece.

We should not have any problems with the V.3 weights, but is there are problems they need to get brought up here.

thanks

I want that

So, need some opinions here.

I have been getting some push to make the Ultimates V.3 in the Butter color.  My problem is the minimum order is 2000 units.  I am not sure the market would absorb 2K units of the V.3 in Butter.  It is a HUGE outlay for me and the problem I see is if they go slow, I will not be able to turn them over fast enough to keep them profitable.

With every major Twitch streamer using them for their live games, they are in demand now.  People want to use what Nakamura, Rosen, Botez, and the others are using.  Getting these people the color in the V.3 with the new weighting system should be a great selling point too.

The only company that still has any of the Butters in V.2 is the Rochester Chess Center.  If you need them...they told me they have 16 left.

I would love to get opinions on this...both positive and negative.  All opinions count.

As an owner and fan of Butter Ultimates, V3 Ultimates, and Wood Ultimates, I'm here to show my support for V3 Butter Ultimates in this thread, too. grin.png

If there is a large minimum order requirement/ than the easy answer is no/

the overwhelming majority of people on this site prefer the other colors/there are people who post saying they like them but for every one of those posters there are 10--20 buyers who want the orginal colors/ remember the last time when we had to wait for almost a year when you were saying the really ugly yellows weren't moving fast enough!?

goommba88,

That is my quandary.  Before we did not have all the big streamers using the set.  That brings the set to a lot more people who want to emulate what their icons do.  Personally, I still would not own one...but that is just my opinion.

Trying to see what people think on the forums...but it seems like a bunch of the regular posters are not interested anymore.

It is a huge investment to bring them back.  I am thinking that we might just want to fill the one order for the 2K units for a private customer and be done with it.

Everyone wants the butters! What a twist. On another note, my neighbor was asking if I would like him to make a chess board out of wood. I thought it would be cool to have one made for the the ultimate pieces. Can anyone recommend a square size and color scheme that's fitting for the new style of Ultimates?

Borregaard95

Are there any vendors within EU selling the ultimate chess set?

martinbchess

I got mine from Amazon uk.

AlphaMelon,

I would recommend a 2.25" square for the board, maybe a 2 3/8".

Chess Set Sizing - Pieces vs Board...

The primary sizing criteria for the pieces vs board is that of square size vs King base diameter...
A good rule of thumb is...

King base diameter = 0.75 * square size
or equivalently....
Square size = 1.33 * King base diameter

Any variation from these ratios, or the size of individual pieces and pawns, becomes a matter of personal preference...

Nice

It is amazing

I'm more of a newb than most and late to this thread, but I recently acquired the V.3's, and had they been available in butter color, I would have purchased them. I like the "appliance white" just fine, but the butter color just pops against the white squares of a typical vinyl or mousepad board (which are more likely to be used when playing with plastic vs. a wooden chess board). I think this contrast is what draws streamers (easier to follow action on the board) and observers to the set. My $0.02. But a 2K unit outlay is no small order so I understand the quandary. If they are released, I'll probably either sell or donate my existing V.3's and pick up some butters happy.png

I love you

It's so funny when you read back in this thread the amount of complaining about the butter yellow color originally and now the complete turnaround...  I've got 5 sets of Butters and 3 sets of V3s for my chess club anyway, so I like them both just fine.  But I just remember the grief Shelby took on that original yellow color on the V2s and how different it was from the V1s

TundraMike

@SybotCB  Absolutely correct. He couldn't sell the butters at a discount for a long time.

People always want what they can't get very easily, just the way it is, human nature I guess.
