Close... difficult to say.  Color is such a funny thing.  Lighting, background, other colors in the same room all can change what a color might look like.  Can't say for sure until you have the pieces in your hand.  Maybe this is why I like the absence of color :-)  You know what they say about opinions :-)

Thanks!

so true.

Russ I do prefer the ivory as well.

Eyechess

Ah, but the original only came in that cream color.  And it sold very well.

I also like the way the ivory or white looks in the pictures, but I have found that I really prefer the cream, natural or whatever you call it when playing with a set on a chess board.

I actually prefer the cream/natural color.  But so far I have yet to see a photo of the pieces that accurately exhibit that color....

This business of showing the pieces against a PMS color swatch is confusing the issue.  What does PMS color swatch (which has a yellow hue, at least in the photos posted) have to do with the color of the White (cream/natural) pieces..???

Figured the best way to show everyone is to take an old piece and show it on top of the PMS color swatch.  Check it out

that looks much different with the warm wood background.  the swatch does look a little different than the chess piece. they are close.

until you have a set it hand it will be difficult to get a real accurate feel for the pigment picky :-)

no matter what the color I think the set will sell, there is so much demand for it.  I'm sure this production lot is already sold.

I do think it is very nice of Shelby to have his customers in the loop like this.  My point on opinions is that you cant make everyone happy.

I had the pleasure of appraising this chess set before it was donated to the Seattle Museum of History and Industry. Quite possibly the worlds most expensive chess set.null

kenardi - Of course, since your preference is for the ivory/white pieces, and given that Shelby has posted (accurate) photos of those pieces, it stands to reason that you would have little concern about the fact that no accurately rendered photos of the so-called cream/natural pieces have yet been provided.  But for those of us (whom you apparently consider "picky") who would prefer the cream/natural pieces, the fact that no accurate photos of those have yet been forthcoming is very much an issue.  Especially if the pieces that are advertised as being cream/natural are in fact more yellow than cream or natural.   And also given the fact that Shelby has announced that only the "cream" pieces will be available initially.

Thank you Shelby.  Contrasting with a pure white reference background provides a more accurate depiction of the color of the piece.  I'll be happy if the color of the new cream/natural pieces is the same.

However, I still don't know what the point of including the PMS color swatch is.  Unless it's just to show that the color of the piece is not the same as the swatch...

Eyechess

Russ, I believe the color swatch represents the actual color Shelby gave to the manufacturer in China.  Therefore the color swatch is what the manufacturer in China is making the new set.

Thanks Eyechess.  If that is true then I am becoming even more concerned that the color of the new pieces will be more yellow than cream/natural...

it is pretty obvious, they are yellow :-)

Interesting, so now customers from both the ivory and cream camps are not happy.

seems to prove my point. :-)

Looks like a job for Joe and James:

Here, I have adjusted the two images (close) to match the swath in Shelby's image.  Not going to to be perfect, but at least the colors in the two images are closer, or should be closer.  Ivory is so much simpler.

Shelby,

Is this the final color?

PANTONE 127 U

Or are you waiting to receive samples of the pieces to confirm?

Thanks!

RussBell

The Pantone 127 U color swatch apparently provided to the manufacturer by Shelby for production of the recent incarnation of the Ultimate Chess Set is clearly a variant of yellow (at least, to me) - certainly not cream, natural, beige or white.  Nor does it match the color of the original Ultimate set (as shown in the photos of the original rooks together with the 127 U swatch posted by Kenardi above)....

Here are some examples of what I consider to be a cream, natural or beige color......

or....

Pantone P 7-1 U

Pantone P 4-1 C

Pantone P 7-2 C

To my eyes, either P 7-1 U or P 7-1 C are closest in color to the original Ultimate set.

kenardi

Trying to match a color is a funny thing, our brains are not wired for it, I'm sure you have seen this trick before with simple shading.  Both the A and B squares are the same exact color.
