In September I will visit London for a while. Could anybody please suggest me the places where I can buy used (second-hand) chess books?

My sugestion is to save your money. I have about 75 chess books & 3 opening books. The amature chess players always deviate from the norm & you are stuck with useless info that will not help you win games.

Assuming that winning games is the only reason why someone would buy a chess book.

Well, it depends on the kind of book you are reading, if it's one of Dan Heisman's books and your rating is under 1700 FIDE, you are going to learn a lot. On the contrary, if you purchase "My Best Games" by Anatoly Karpov, you're not going to get much from it, because it's aimed at advanced players, the author assumes his intended readership already knows a lot about Chess.

My suggestion is to buy as many as you can, they will probably be dirt cheap.

Exactly. And I'm not buying this assumption. (As well as the one that you cannot learn from the book how too refute the deviations from the norm - see Euwe's Chess Master vs Chess Amateur)

There are lots of secondhand bookshops in the Charing Cross Road and Bloomsbury areas of West Central London. I don't know of any specializing in chess books, but I am sure many will have a selection in stock.

See, e.g.:

With Amazon, you're generally right. However, when I have to pay 16-17 $ for delivery many of these offers are not bargains any more.

Skoob books (yes, that's really their name) in the Brunswick shopping center in Bloomsbury has some decent chess stock. The Bloomsbury oxfam book shop usually has a few interesting things. I haven't checked out the used shops on Charing Cross road, but right in the same area is Foyles (new books), which has a decent size chess section.

Chess and bridge is pretty cool, but not cheap. On the other hand, they have some interesting looking clearance sale stuff sometimes.
