Varnishing or waxing a Chessnut Air + board

I'm thinking of varnishing or more likely waxing my Chessnut Air + board. Has anyone else done this? As with the Chessnut Pro the veneer is rather light and dull, I'd like to darken it a little but mainly want to give it a little more protection.
