I've used those...They do dry out,but can be replenished.One needs to keep an eye on them.
what are you using to store sets in?

Whatever it costs, if you have an expensive or nice wooden set, get it. The bases of my major pieces are all cracked on my big wooden set.
Try these. They work. Amazon sells them also.
If I ever buy another decent set, I likely will. Until then, I'll live my shameful chesspiece abuser life for all to see.

The XL box for if I get the 6" Philippines set. For now I store 3.75" dubrovnik set all standing up and have some room left for an apple, 1L stanley thermos and a small chess clock.
New Zealand Chess Supplies. I'm not sure what sort of cost you'd be looking at after shipping to the U.S. The medium size is ideal for 3.75" and the large should be ok for anything up to 4.5".
Thanks!

As I take a break from work for a bit of lunch - I thought I should update this thread. As noted earlier, my wonderful uncle is an amateur wood worker and he made this storage box for me using QLD Maple with Jarrah highlights. He noted that it was actually quite a hard project for him and the top and hinges gave him some sleepless nights. Indeed, the top warped and had to be 'fixed' and he had not fitted hinges like these before. Some imperfections therefore exist but in my mind - they are part of the wonderful effort that he kindly went too. Anyway - some pictures follow.
It is hard to explain but the box comes alive in natural light as the grain seems to dance. I love it. A family heirloom to be sure.

Now THAT is a nice looking box. Excellent work. What's that rectangular bit on the back inside lid? Mini hygrometer? Nameplate?

@Powderdigit -
A very special box indeed from your uncle. And absolutely a treasured family heirloom!

@Powderdigit you are indeed blessed with the craftsmanship of your Uncle. the box looks wonderful with very nice personal touches. You nailed it with the family heirloom comment. Thank you for sharing this family journey with us. Please tell your Uncle thank you as well. A lot of love is in that box-o-wood my friend!

Here's a cheap case I found for my Ultimate Chess Pieces. This Hard EVA case is really for an Oculus headset. $8.99 on Amazon with 10% coupon. Knocks it down to $8 shipped.
It's the perfect fit for the Ultimates. Or any 3.75" chess set really. I just like to use it for the Ultimates because since they are so durable, it's ok for the plastic pieces to be all jumbled up in there knocking against each other without worry. No need to baby the Ultimates.
