I'm so jealous you people have very nice chess sets.
It's very difficult to find nice chess sets here...
Doesn't FedEx deliver to Indonesia?

I like this chess pieces(above)
For those of you that own a House of Staunton set as well as another - Is the House of Staunton set THE set to own? Or are there others that are just as high quality w/o the higher price?
Thank you...
I don't know enough about Indonesia in general or your situation in particular to know whether that would be reasonable and/or feasible. Here in The U.S., kids order a lot worse things than chess sets online.
I see I'm responding five years too late, but better late than never.
erik is correct. No offense, but those glass chess sets pictured on Page 1 are absolutely terrible.
For one, they are too small. Two, there is not a very good contrast between the white and black pieces. Three, the base of the pieces are MUCH too large for the squares. (Ideally, a good rule of thumb is that four paws should be able to fit on one square.)
Those cheap glass chess sets are an absolute joke. You should never use those for playing or studying. In fact, I wouldn't even be proud to display one in my home. They're terrible.
I own several chess sets.
My Travel Magnetic Set
I usually use this for analysis or for reading chess books. It's small, magnetic and portable. It doesn't require much space and can be carried around everywhere, but it may be a bit too small for playing against another person. For playing against another person, I use the next two sets.
My Favorite Set
This is my prize possession. I had this custom-ordered and tailor-made by a local craftman, with the weighting, the material, etc. made to my preference. It's made of Mentaos and Indian Rosewood. It's probably the only one in the world (unless if the craftman decides to use my design requirements and sell them to another people. That would suck btw ). I am a bit picky when it comes to the shape of a knight piece. I think a knight piece should look like a horse. I don't care about realism, but it must have the elegance of a horse. I have seen sets whose knights look more like dolphins, snakes, dragons, or some abominable creatures. In my opinion, those are poorly designed knights.
I use this set for playing against close friends and family, people whom I know are going to be gentle with my set. For playing against idiots who have no respect for other people's set, I use the next set.
My Battle-hardened Set
This is a cheap and ugly set. It's made of very light and cheap wood. The pieces are plain ugly and carry no weights at all. It's a typical chess set available at any sport shop in Indonesia. I own this set for years. It has been a silent witness and a loyal companion through my countless chess battles against various oppositions. It has battle scars all over the place. It has chips, scratches, and stain everywhere on both the pieces and the board.
Looking at the set, it is unbelievable how many people have little respect for other people's possession. I have seen people slamming my piece against the board, tapping my chess piece (an already captured piece) against the table while thinking, spilling tea and coffee onto the board, eating/snacking with their oily fingers touching my chess piece, carelessly dropped my chess piece from a table onto a hard floor, etc. One guy even put the tip of my bishop piece into his mouth while he was thinking. There are all kind of those stories engraved permanently onto this set. Some people are just plain idiots.
My Balinese Set
I got this from Bali. It's a common chess set available at any gift shop in Bali. The quality varies from shop to shop so you gotta shop around and be picky when buying such set. The pieces are handcrafted into the shapes of gargoyle-like creatures. I don't play with this set, as it is tad difficult to distinguish the pieces, but it was a fine craftmanship nonetheless.
Glass Set
I have a fancy glass chess set given to me as a gift years ago. I remember storing the set at some secure place because I was concerned about the set being broken, especiallyI got my kid nieces and nephews coming to my place often. In fact, the location is so secure that I can't seem to find it back now. It should still be somewhere in the house though.
This is what we use in our university lab. I've got a very similar one at home (larger board, heavier pieces).
Years back someone posted that they had a chess set made up of cologne bottles! They were struggling with pics.
I've just bought a set - 32 Avon after shave bottles - all in boxes, unopened.
Avon produced these from 1971 to 1978.
They also did a limited edition board which they gave to top reps or gave away at Avon conventions.
Sadly I have no board.
Just a few pics, still unwrapping!
Remote is for size comparison!
