What's a good book for a relative beginner?
Fyi I received my order of chernev's Logical Chess and started reading it already. I love it! Reading it is like being inside the mind of a better player. The move by move format-with each move being explained along with explanations of the reasons possible alternative moves were not chosen makes this book a step beyond pure beginner's books and EZ tactical puzzle collections. I'm not even past the initial chapter/yet so it's still too early to post my ultimate opinion, but so far I'm very pleased.reading this book must be similar to what it's like to have your own personal chess coach. Of course the best evidence of its efficacy will be whether or not my actual playing skill improves. :-) I hope this post helps someone else out there

Bobby Fischer teaches chess, its a easy read with simple problems but definitely worth it to train you to see mates, if you think you are decent then you should fly through the book no problem but as easy as it seems it will help you in a game because your checkmate blade will be sharpened. another reason i think its good is it requires no board so for a begginer it requires mental visualization or at least the first steps towards it. in a way its like a tactical trainer before there were tactical trainers but better. My freind said the book sucked then i told him to prove it by running through the problems quickly with no mistakes, he missed a few simple problems due to blind spots in the way he looked at the board, so yeah its a decent book.
My System is my favorite and I credit that book for helping my chess more than any other single chess book .... I spent several months on it many years ago ... my rating jumped 300 points in 1 year after studying it from 1500s-1800s !
