Chess tactics.  any tactics book.

I could depend on the relative.  Are we talking about a sister or cousin? an Aunt or an Uncle? what about Step parents or two mothers?  One thing is certain, you won't be a beginner long if you plunge into family issues.

it seems no one can articulate what is better about CT...

How convenient, just ignore people who have specifically stated whats better and then claim no one has. Well I'm not sure if thats convenient or if you just werent reading carefully. Go back and look at my post in page 3. Thats just a simple explanation of why CT is much better, not even taking into account the many advanced features dealing with problem sets and statistical data they have.

What post on page 3???

Someone who improved as an adult has written a book

about how he achieved his improvement, so his experience must be very useful to you. He explains his training methods and helps you by saying how to do the same. I found his book on 3 websites, click if you want to see it here , here or read some pages here.

According to what he says inside you probably need a good book for tactics like this

Alright. I picked up Chess for dummies and Logical chess by Irving Chernev from a Library. Had to go a little out of my way to find that book. Thanks for the advice guys.

You'd think he gets a referral bonus or something.  Give it a rest already.

Chess For Dummies or The Idiot's Guide to Chess?  The latter is the one that is generally recommended.  Never read the former.  I'm sure it's fine, don't stress too much over it.

Hey everyone I recently told one of my closest co-workers about my return to the game and this website and she told me she always wanted to learn how to play.So I bought her a wooden Staunton set for her living room, How to Beat Your Dad, and Chess for Kids. Starting next week I'll be giving her absolute beginner lessons at our office @ lunchtime !

A bottle of Absolute is always handy when teaching beginners.  I think it is a Russian inovation.

Ummm.... Absolut (I'm guessing that's what you meant) is Swedish. Perhaps Stolichnaya or Smirnoff would be more useful for the budding chess player. (Providing of course that person is of age.)

Nimzovich: My System

I fully agree. My System is, atleast according to me, the best chess book written till date. It covers from openings to endgames. But it explains nothing about tactics and concentrates on Positional play.

I heard that My system was more advanced, but isn't part 1 "The elements" useful for the less advanced?

It's not a book I'd recommend to a beginner.

It should be illegal to read for anyone below about 1900 USCF.  I read it early on and I think it did much harm to my chess development (such as it is).

That is an exaggeration, I'd say below 1400 maybe.  At 1900 is when you should be studying Chess Strategy in Action, Exploiting Small Advantages, and Dynamic Pawn Play in Chess as well as the School of Chess Excellence and School of Future Champions series.

If you just read My System in a weekend, it'll be almost useless. There are plenty of books where such a casual reading will help your chess. But you get out of the book what you put into it. I do believe that My System is suitable for novices. I was a relative novice when I studied it. But I spent a couple months on it.

If you set up the board and spend the time to understand what Nimzo is saying, it will help almost any player who is currently rated below 1800 and has never studied it.
