HOS by a country mile.   Seems like a great price for those who don't have the budget for the exquisite Noj set.

"I didn't take price into consideration like you said but I would pay the extra $80 or so for the HOS set just because I like the quality that much better."

The HOS set is cheaper by a little over 50 bucks. So price actually goes to HOS. Though they are made of different woods. The HOS is "ebonized" which I suppose means painted. The CB set is sheesham on the dark side....

The HOS set retails for $199.00 (plus S/H)

The CB set retails for $119.99 (plus free shipping).

But the point is moot, I guess, as the CB Dubrovnik is already sold out...

I'm sure CB wil make another batch of sets soon

I'm looking at CB's Ebay site and the one the OP posted in Sheesham wood is listed at $254.95. They have one left according to the caption.

I can't pull up the HOS site now for some reason. Think their site is having problems. I'm fairly certain the HOS set the OP posted was listed at $199.95.

By the way, they(CB) also have a "crimson stained" and boxwood version for $149.95

Wow, just checked CB's website and you're right. They're listed at $119.99. Sure would be pissed if I bought it from their Ebay store for over twice that. Ouch. Remind me to never buy from them off ebay :)

That stained crimson set looks interesting. Not usually a fan of red pieces but in that particular set I'm not so sure.... Hmmm

CB has to cover the Ebay fees, that why its higher

I like the red stain. Red stain pieces are showing up in U.S.  tournaments, but more so in European tournaments

CB raised the price of their sheesham Dubrovnik on eBay, from $149 to $254.

I think its a marketing tool used by CB to create more interest in their sets.

I can see the ebay price being slightly higher to cover costs, but over TWICE the price? That's a rip off.

Its hype to create more interest in their Dubrovnik sets

The eBay fee is 10% and they woul dget a 20% discount for being a top seller so in reality it is 8% more. Credit card fees or PayPal is the same either way. Also you still incur some costs even though much less with your own web site.  So it should be at MOST 10% more.   I know since I own an on line store as well as an eBay store.  Just thought I would clear it up as you do not have to charge 50% more to cover ebay fees. EBay is actually cheaper than selling on Amazon just to let you know.

HOS set appears more precise and hence I like them more. I would go with them

Agree the craftsmanship seems better.

goodnightmike, I hope you're enjoying that Zagreb set you purchased from me last week. I just received my HOS Dubrovnik set yesterday. Bought it off eBay at a "make an offer" price. I can't compare with the CB set because I purchased from them ONCE, but never will again! It was the worst experience I've ever had buying chess equipment. Won't go into details here, except to say the set was received in abysmal condition - worst case imaginable. And when I tried contacting them via email - 4 times over the next 5 days, they never responded. I contested the sale through AMEX and eventually won -- because they wouldn't even respond to American Express! So buyers beware! One or two minor problems may get resolved, but if you have a larger issue, like I did, you may get the silent treatment. So much for their great customer service.

This question is for those who own this HOS set, what is the weight of your 32-piece set? The website says this set weighs 50 oz., but the set I received weighs in at a touch over 65 oz.! Which is a great weight for a 3.75" set.

P.S. The ebonizing on the HOS set is simply first rate. Jet black and highly polished. It's hard to tell the difference from actual ebony.

Loubalch, my HOS Dubrovnik weighs 65.8 oz. not counting the extra Queens

Avatar of loubalch

About the same as mine. Apparently, the HOS listing of 50 oz. for the total weight of the set is incorrect.
