The traditional Staunton design is much nicer. The Russian set's packaging is,like a lot of things Russian, just plain junk.
Which Vintage Soviet Russian Set do you Like the Most?

Junk Russian chess is an oxymoron. When you see the great Soviet players, it is these pieces in their fingers, on their boards, and visualized in their wonderful minds.

I will take some pics of my #1 this weekend. Meanwhile, here are the seller's shots of the #3 I just picked up.
Very nice set Chuck. Is the set weighted? Set looks in great condition and having the box is great!
Mike, I honestly don't know whether they're weighted. I'll let you know when they arrive.

Russia is a decadent place with an absolutely awful, vile history...especially in the past one hundred years. It produces nothing but junk.
Lebid, I see you belong to a group that dedicates itself to promoting anti-Russian political views on this site. I am no fan of Putin either, but political trolling is prohibited here, and with good reason. I have political views too, but I save them for Facebook and other fora where they are more appropriate. Beyond that, the irrational tone of your posts does little to promote your point of view, even to those who might otherwise sympathize with it. So please, criticize the design of these pieces if you wish, that is what this space is for, but spare the rest of us your political proselytizing. Many thanks.

I had set number 4 but lost it. I used to play with it in a park. People were saying that it was beautiful. A bit crude, yes, but really great.

Thanks Chuck
I was thinking about blocking him. I was just waiting for one more lame comment before doing so.

Something arrived today... And, Mike, it's nicely weighted!
Very nice Chuck. Love the pieces! The pieces look to be in pristine condition. I thought your set would be weighted like mine.

Thanks, Mike! the pieces are in near-mint condition. Some of the weights have to be adjusted for the pieces to sit solidly, and I really don't like the plastic knight heads. Maybe I could find someone in North Carolina to carve wooden ones. I also want to prepare some sketches for the Tal pieces, and I think these will be good baselines to work from.

I like the plastic knight heads and would not replace them with wood heads. Afterall this is a vintage set and I would never alter its original beauty, particularly since this set is in such prestine condition! Good luck with the Tal set skectches.
Well, you could take a Sharpie and make the eyes of the knights black and use a bit of WhiteOut for the black knights,...just kidding.
I suppose I need to clarify. When I wrote "just kidding." above it meant that I was just kidding about using WhiteOut with those beige being the light piece color.
You would really use BeigeOut or maybe MustardOut or even EcruOut, WhiteOut would be too gaudy. But then the finials on that set are white so maybe WhiteOut...
Really, I really am just kidding or joking about it all
