Identifying a coach specialising in 50+ students

Hi

I'm a 50-something chess player who has taken the game up again during lockdown after almost no chess for ~23 years.  My current best rating is chess.com rapid 1340.

Looking at coaching profiles, I mostly see references to improvements with teenage students.

I'm idly thinking about maybe engaging a chess coach in 1-3 months.  I have a study list which includes completing the following chessable courses first:

  • 100 EYMK - done
  • Mastering Chess Strategy  - 90% done
  • Mastering Opening Strategy - 5% done
  • Mastering Endgame Strategy - 20% done
  • Woodpecker Method - 20% done

Can anyone advise on how to filter for coaches who have a proven track record of improving 40+ yo chess players?

I should add that my peak puzzle rating is over 2500 and I don't understand the gap between my rapid rating and my puzzle rating.

Very interesting - same for me. Also 50 and haven‘t played around 25 years. A Coach specialist for „senior citizens“ would really be nice.

Puzzle ratings just don’t match up with regular ratings. Having ratings over 2000 is very common for players rated significantly lower.

Agreed.  There are puzzles requiring 3+ precise unusual moves rated below 1200 and common mate-in-1s rated 1800+.

But there is a general correlation between puzzle difficulty and puzzle rating, and a rating of 2000 is normally better than a rating of 1500.

I wrote a 6-part blog about 50+ players:

Let me know if any of it helps.

Hi! I've been training students since 5+ years and some of them are veterans who have achieved great success lately. If you're interested, consider messaging me directly and we can take it from there.
