Greetings, Chess Enthusiasts,

I’m Coach Kestony, a full-time chess coach with over 13 years of professional coaching experience, totaling 15,000+ hours of one-on-one instruction, and 25 years as a competitive player.

I work primarily with adult improvers who want structured, long-term progress rather than quick fixes or generic lessons. My focus is on clarity, consistency, and developing strong thinking processes at the board—not just memorizing moves.

What Students Commonly Value

  • Clear, structured explanations of complex ideas

  • Personalized training plans between lessons

  • In-depth game analysis tailored to individual weaknesses

  • A supportive, methodical approach that keeps improvement steady and sustainable

Over the years, I’ve coached:

  • Adult beginners progressing from under 1000 to 2000+

  • State and national-level youth players

  • Tournament competitors and master-level players refining their path

This forum thread is for current and former students who’d like to share their honest experience working with me—what helped, what changed in their chess, and how the overall process felt.

Very good coach at extremely affordable rates. He has got immense experience and knowledge to put into practice. He teaches the basic and advanced concepts in middlegame in a very efficient manner, which is very enjoyable and encouraging. He trains and analyses games very well which is very easy to grasp and understand. I feel much more confident with my tactics and positional understanding since taking lessons from him. He is very flexible with his timing and speaks english very fluently. He is not just a good coach but also a very strong motivator who will encourage you to become better chess player when you lose games or you lose interests.

Excellent coach!! Unlike most coaches, Kestony is very flexible in scheduling lessons and always well prepared for the lessons. He never worries about session duration and our lessons stretched well over the paid time. Also, while choosing a coach I am a bit concerned about language barriers but Kestony is pretty fluent in English.

I particularly liked our session on rook and queen improvement and I can definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a good coach.

I had my first lesson with Kestony. He put a lot of humor in my errors which I appreciate; helps me remember the lesson. Went through a few lessons on pinning and forking followed by reviewing a few of my games. Great to go through with him so he can pick apart the flaws and improve your game. I am really looking forward to our next lesson.

Amazing coach!! At first I had second thoughts about online classes because it was my first time, but after the class I was very happy that I contacted Mr. Kestony for online classes

I have found Obie one. That is right. May the force be with you. After listening, yes listening. I was graced by a master. I am only sorry to say that I retained a fraction of the jewels poured over me. Next time I will have to bring a basket. So later I can fondle through them. Pick up the jems.

I completely agree with the statements below: Kestony is a great coach. I can recommend 100%. You will get a coach who really cares about his students. He perfectly adjusted the lessons to my current level: Not too slow, not too fast, not too easy, not too difficult. All you need is Skype and you are good to go. Thanks!

This guy is amazing, we only had our first lesson together, but I've learned a ton of information from him. He's the real deal with very afforable rates. And he's an amazing person overall.

Time to celebrate for me... :-)

150 rating points improvement on chess.com in just six weeks! I consider myself to be an above average hobby player and Kestony helped me with the first steps to sustainably improve my chess: Overcome an amateur's style of thinking and start to evaluate the board from a positional point of view.

Thanks! :-)

I have had 3 classes with Kestony so far. Very different approach comparing to my last coach. He is very passionate about his work which is encouraging. I really enjoy his style and his focus on the middle game. I like how he focuses on a subject and keeps questioning you until you master that topic. Looking forward to our next session.

I had my first lesson a couple of weeks back, and it was everything I hoped for. Kestony had looked through my games here on chess.com and picked out my weaknesses (tactics most notably, as well as a bit of tunnel vision on my pieces), and in the course of the lesson explained a lot of concepts and gave a lot of tips on how to fight those weaknesses.

He was also very encouraging by pointing out my strengths, as well. After a week of terrible blunders and mostly lost games, this was nice to hear.

I've been playing chess for almost 30 years, and I think I learned more in that one hour than I had in the previous 20 years combined.

I'm looking forward to my future lessons, as I work to break years of bad habits and put this knowledge into practice. :-)
