Bah. Ding knew all along what move he was going to play. That was a deliberate psych-out. He played on people's memory of Game 7 to mess with Ian's head.
2023 FIDE World Championship

Ding tied the match with a win today in game 12. Only 2 classical games left.
Possibly the wildest game yet. I thought the eval bar was going to break.
This WC has turned out to be an incredible match.

Oh, man, this is wild. We all know anyone can blunder, but both players, in a WCC, in the same game? This is going to go to a tiebreak...

What happened if the score is 7-7 at the end of the 14 games ? Could Magnus still be world champion by not playing at all ?

Here's the tiebreaker.
- A match consisting of 4 rapid games with 25 minutes per side and a 10-second increment starting with move 1 will be played. If a player scores 2½ points or more, he would win the championship.
- If the score is equal after the rapid portion, a mini-match of two blitz games will be played, with a time control of 5 minutes per side and a 3-second increment starting with move 1. If a player scores 1½ points or more, he would win the championship. If the blitz mini-match is tied, another mini-match with the same conditions will be played to decide the winner of the championship.
- If both blitz mini-matches are tied, a single game with a time control of 3 minutes per side and a 2-second increment starting with move 1 will be played, and the winner would win the championship. A drawing of lots shall decide which player plays with the white pieces. If this game is drawn, another blitz game with reversed colours will be played with the same time control, and the winner would win the championship. This process will be repeated until either player wins a game.

That's much more complex than expected...

I like the ending (5/3 blitz games) much better than armageddon. It'll be until a player wins.
Yes, agreed. A far better structure than Armageddon, by far.
I'm really hoping for a Ding victory. I shared a table with him at a social function a couple of years ago. Really nice guy, not arrogant; he even volunteered to play a skittles game with me which (foolishly) I declined for fear of getting my b-tt kicked :-) Go Ding go (but watch that clock!)

YOU SHARED A TABLE WITH A SUPER-GM!? HOW??
@ice cream cake "YOU SHARED A TABLE WITH A SUPER-GM!? HOW??"
I work in China, same city Ding lives in. He was a guest at the wedding of a Chinese co worker - a wedding that I was also attending. The host knew I was a chess player so kindly put me on the same table. A great decision on her part :-)
Believe it or not, I said to Ding that he could be world champion in 2 years. Looks like I may now be right!!!!

Tania Sachdev sounded like she was gonna pull her hair out when Dings time went under 20 seconds and he hadn't played move 40.
