In my opinion it depends on rating
<1500 Play 1.e4
1500-2000 Play e4 or d4
2000+ e4, d4, c4, Nf3
Of course this applies to
classical, 1. b3 is a decent choice for all levels in shorter time controls as is 1. g3

1. d4 is best forever! If 1. e4?? c6! Black wins.
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e3
1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7
One way to decide is click here to test your chess personality, it'll tell you what opening you should play when finished the test. (This is a website in the "resource" in chess.com so it's probably save). It kind of depends on whether you like tactics or you're more of a player to play in a closed pawn structure and win your opponent with him having no counter play or something.
So you can play the queens gambit (1.d4 d5 2.c4) or play the ruy lopez (1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5) (I'm a prodigy too but I like queen's gambit better.) Both are opening that doesn't have much chances to get an attack, but can still be fun if you can knock your opponent out without him even having counter play! (So it kind of still don't solve you should play 1.d4 or 1.e4... but you can try both)
Is e4 better or d4? Or if you have any other good openings for white, please post.
