Black is perfectly fine here, especially now that the knight can't move to c3

Correct, at some point after playing d2-d4, White wants black to take on d4, takes back with c3 pawn and c3 square is vacated for the knight to win tempo against the Queen on d5.

Sometimes yes, also other times the knight goes to a3, where black can’t handle whites rapid development

Hey everyone, it’s been a while, how goes the chess. I returned to see if anyone has found a defense against the Alapin. Unfortunately not, but enjoy this game and blacks admirable attempt at surviving 2. C3

The time control was 3 minute no increment if anyone is curious

@staples13,

1. Have you realized that you are only sending games of yours that were played against weaker opponents (100 less rating than you)?

2. Black is not particularly worse after White plays the alapin. Only Black's blunders are allowing you to win.

Vasilis_64

Well, a 1900+ player is not weak. That was a good one my friend! Thanks for sharing.

Yes but he is 2000+, and almost all of the matches he shared were against people with around 100 rating less than him. @Vasilis_64 please read earlier chats and others' opinions. I was here when this forum first started.

In the 17th round of the ongoing TCEC computer chess championship all the engines are playing the c3 sicilian, though not the most critical lines from the Black side. There are 4 games in total. White has won 3 games so far.

Great post! What went wrong the 4th game, I’m curious how black managed to eek out a draw

Yeah seems  like there are more 1900 rated players here in chess.com than 2100 rated. Does seem like I normally get paired with people rated slightly below me more often then slightly above me

No need to think it seemed.

100% certain that there are much less 2100 players than 1900. Look at blitz rating distribution curve.

Congrats to BengleTiger for finding the correct response to 2. C3!

MyNameIsNotBuddy

Ran it through Stockfish and let it sit in analysis mode for a minute (exactly). After white played Nf3, it said 0.30 after a minute of analysis. For c3, it said 0.08 after a minute of analysis. Alapin is not the best response to Sicilian according to Stockfish.

And granted, a minute is a pretty decent amount of time.

The Alapin is fine for White. But it's mostly for White players who want to play against Black in a relatively equal game, with only a slight imbalance.

If Black knows what he's doing, then he equalizes against the Alapin pretty easily.

The Open, though, is a more aggressive try by White. It tends to maintain more pressure, creates more imbalances, and allows Black more opportunities to go wrong.

?? Stock fish routinely loses games to the Alapin
